  <Title>iSchool Inclusion Institute at UPitt</Title>
  <Tagline>multidisciplinary summer program for information science</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><span>The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3) is offered to address a critical problem within the information sciences: a lack of diversity among its students and faculty. To foster a culture of creativity, innovation, and collaboration across disciplines, the information schools (iSchools) must actively recruit and develop students and faculty from underrepresented segments of the population. The iSchools need a diverse group of future leaders to take on the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. i3 is committed to developing those leaders. </span><br><br><span>Each year, approximately 20 undergraduate students from across the country are selected to become i3 Scholars. Those students undertake a year-long experience which prepares them for graduate study in the information sciences and ultimately a rewarding career that matches their interests. The i3 program includes three core components: </span><br><ul><li>Four-Week Introductory Institute</li><li>Team Research Project</li><li>Two-Week Concluding Institute</li></ul>

  <Title>Summer Research Opportunity!</Title>

    <div class="html-content">MURF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS<br>
              <br>
              The MURF program aims to increase the participation of
              underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic,
              and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their
              discipline, or first-generation college students) in science
              and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make
              Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally
              exposed to Caltech.<br>
              <br>
              Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through
              non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens or U.S.
              permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.<br>
              <br>
              Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level
              courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through
              academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for
              research, and can articulate how their research interests
              align with Caltech's research areas.<br>
              <br>
              Support: MURF students will receive a $6000 award for the
              ten-week program. An additional $500 housing and travel
              supplement will be provided.<br>

                  Health Research Experience Program (EH REP) at the
                  University of Washington Seattle</span></p>
              
              <p><span>The
                  Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP)
                  is a funded nine week, summer experience for
                  undergraduates with interest in an interdisciplinary field
                  that uses the tools of science to solve human health
                  problems related to the environment. EHREP provides
                  students with hands on experience in laboratories of
                  leading researchers, introduces them to key environmental
                  and occupational health issues while offering research
                  exposure that will help them become competitive for
                  graduate school.<span>  </span>Students
                  will work full-time under the supervision of a faculty
                  mentor and will receive a stipend of $5,200.<span>  </span></span></p>
              
              <p><span> The program is
                  meant for students underrepresented in the sciences.<span>  </span>The deadline for
                  student applications is February 15, 2012.<span>  </span></span></p>

    <div class="html-content"><strong><span>S</span><span><u>PIRE-EIT </u>(Summer Program for Interdisciplinary Research and Education - Emerging Interface Technology)</span></strong><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong><u>Deadline: FEBRUARY 15, 2012<br></u></strong></span><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Description: NSF supported Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). 10-week multidisciplinary program where participants work in teams on projects ranging from <strong>virtual and augmented reality</strong> to <strong>robotics</strong> to <strong>biology simulations</strong> to<strong> mobile app development</strong>. This program is especially good for freshmen and students new to research because it's very structured and includes a lot of skill development, but the difficulty of the projects scale well for upperclassmen interested as well. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Required Major: NONE! This is a multidisciplinary program designed to encourage collaboration and discovery.           <div class="html-content"><span>The REU program is an intensive ten-week program of laboratory research and instruction. In the program, each REU student receives hands-on laboratory research experience under guidance from faculty and graduate student mentors. The students will also receive classes on ethics in research and technical communication. The students will have the opportunity to tour a local government laboratory and a private company. One of the highlights of the program is the opportunity to participate in a surgery at the Minimally Invasive Surgical Training Center (MISTC) at Johns Hopkins. <strong>The students will be provided housing and a stipend of $4,500 for the 10-week period will be paid.</strong></span></div>
