This is a self-nomination scholarship.     <div class="html-content"><h3><span><span>Congratulations to our Fall 2024 Scholarship Recipients!</span></span></h3><p><span><strong>INDS is pleased to announce the following scholarships for Fall 2024!</strong></span></p><p><strong>Bolton Scholarship: </strong></p><p><span><em>Arianna Johnson</em></span></p><p><span>Arianna is currently majoring in INDS within the Multidisciplinary Studies track. Arianna’s hope is to open a women owned and operated engineering firm. As a First-Generation College student and minority, this opportunity gives her and her family the ability to create history as well as make her ancestors proud.</span></p><p><span><em>AJ Ogunsanya</em></span></p><p><span>AJ is a December 2024 graduation candidate for an INDS Bachelor of Science degree in the Multidisciplinary Studies track. He has combined coursework in Math, Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science and was accepted into the Accelerated Master’s degree program in Engineering Management. This advanced degree will allow him to bridge the gap between technical expertise and business strategy, preparing him for employment in technology-driven industries. He also has experience in Project management as he has interned for the Whiting-Turner Contracting Company over the past two years.</span></p><p><span><strong>Hiebler Scholarship: </strong></span></p><p><span><em>Shera Crews </em></span></p><p><span>Shera is a senior in the INDS program following the Multidisciplinary track. She is proud to be a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. At an internship at the University of Maryland, Shera gained experience in the dentistry lab studying Alzheimer’s disease. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school at University of Maryland School of Nursing to earn her MSN and contribute to research on neurodegenerative diseases.</span></p><p><span><strong>Zainab Damji Scholarship: </strong></span></p><p><span><em>Ada Glaser </em></span></p><p><span>Ada Glaser is an Individualized Study Bachelor of Arts student following the Integrative Studies track. Her INDS degree is focused on child-centered community development; her second major is Social Work.   Ada serves as president of the Social Work Student Association, participates as a member of the campus symphony orchestra, and has been honored to be a Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar where she is a peer mentor for freshmen in the program. This year Ada is excited to be a school social work intern at Furman Templeton Preparatory Academy in Baltimore working with preschool and elementary aged children.     <div class="html-content"><h3>Learn about our Fall 2023 Scholarship Recipients: </h3><p><span>Bolton Scholarship: </span></p><div><em><strong>Justin Coles </strong></em></div><div><p><span>Justin Coles is a junior passionate in a INDS major specializing in biostatistics. </span><span>He has an active role in contributing to new experiences from being math tutor for the academic success center and being a fish lab assistant in a lab. Demonstrating a keen focus on honing versatile skills in analytics, critical thinking, and biological methods, Justin Coles is propelling towards his ambitious goals of pursuing a Master’s or PhD in a related biostatistics field after graduating his senior year. He is dedicated to expanding leadership capabilities, engaging in hands-on learning, and contributing meaningfully to research initiatives and projects.</span></p><p>Zaniab Damji Scholarship: </p><div><div><em><strong>Joy Ware</strong></em></div><div><span>Joy Ware is a junior designing an individualized degree in Educational Technology and Curriculum Development from a Multicultural and Inclusive Framework. </span><span>As a transfer honors college student, she is a Teaching Assistant for the Honors College's Transfer Seminar, and she also manages the African Student Association and builds community as a proud Congolese woman on the ASA board. In her spare time, she enjoys filmmaking and video editing, which she plans to incorporate into her degree. As a UMBC McNair Scholar, she intends to continue her education research after completing her undergraduate studies and will earn a Ph.D. in educational technology and policy. Her hope is to one day become a professor, educational technologist, software developer, and researcher who provides underserved and underrepresented learning communities with an inclusive educational model that supports their learning and overall well-being.</span></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div>Cathy Hiebler Scholarship<strong>: </strong></div></div><div><em><strong><br></strong></em></div><div><em><strong>Shehroze Rashid</strong></em></div><div>Shehroze is a our 1st MDST 2023 graduate who created the <span>Hot food </span><span> </span><span>initiative which</span><span> initiated </span><span>a sustainable program ensuring ready-to-eat meals for consumers, enhancing food options and increasing access for food stamp recipient.</span><span> He is</span><span> passionate about gardening, graphic design, and computer modeling. I'm constantly drawn to understanding the intricacies of how things function. The individualized studies program at UMBC allowed me to intertwine my passion for hands-on activities with my engineering foundation. This unique blend defines both my personal interests and academic pursuits.Upon graduating, Shehroze intends to forge a career centered on sustainability and community-driven initiatives.     <div class="html-content"><h5>SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY<br>
    IN MATHEMATICS, THE NATURAL SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING</h5>
    
    <p>Students interested in a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Established by Congress in 1986,  Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in STEM fields.</p>
    
    <p>Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year and who have excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The scholarship covers undergraduate eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year.</p>
    
    
    <h6>ELIGIBILITY</h6>
    
    <p>To be considered for nomination, a student must:</p>
    <ul>
    <li>Have one or two years of undergraduate</li>
    
    <li>study left and be pursuing a bachelor’s degree on a full-time basis. (A current sophomore student in a two-year college who plans to transfer to a baccalaureate program may be nominated.)</li>
    
    <li>Have an average of at least B or the equivalent.</li>
    
    <li>Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.</li>
    
    <li>Have a demonstrated interest in a research career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.</li>
    
    <li>Be nominated by his or her college or university on the official online nomination application provided by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.</li>
    </ul>
    <p>Scholarship recipients nominated as sophomores can expect to receive a maximum of two years of scholarship support.</p>
    
    <p>Scholarship recipients nominated as juniors are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support.</p>
    
    <h6>HOW TO APPLY</h6>
    <p>Colleges and universities nominate students for Goldwater Scholarships. Information may be obtained from the designated Goldwater Scholarship Campus Representative* (Dr. April Householder) at your institution.</p>
    
    <h6>SELECTION</h6>
    <p>A distinguished committee of educators; deans; and mathematics, natural science, and engineering faculty members will review the nominee’s credentials and recommend a pool of qualified individuals to the Board of Trustees of the Goldwater Foundation. The Trustees will make the final approval.</p>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span><strong>Wednesday, September 13, 12-1, Sondheim 103</strong></span></div><span><div><span><br></span></div>Nationally competitive scholarships help support students to study within the U.S and abroad, by providing funding for graduate school and research opportunities. These scholarships are recognized as some of the most prestigious in the world, and their purpose is to develop outstanding students into leaders whose research and careers will have far-reaching impacts on the world.</span><div><span><br></span></div><div><p>UMBC provides direct support to students seeking to apply for nationally competitive scholarships. If you are interested in applying for one of these opportunities, you are required to upload a dossier which includes your current transcripts, resume, personal statement (if you have one already written), a short statement about your future academic and career plans, and a short statement about why you want to pursue this scholarship. Once this is received, you will be contacted to set up an in-person appointment to meet with Dr. April Householder. Before beginning this process, please review the eligibility guidelines for the scholarship(s) you are interested in.
