To Our Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Many in our community are shocked and saddened by recent events, both on and off campus. This week, UMBC Police are investigating two reports of hate-bias crimes. These reports encompassed an attack on a Muslim student, the use of anti-Black slurs in an online meeting, a targeted verbal attack on a Black student in that meeting, and comments referencing LGBTQ populations. And now, with the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin, we are once again reminded that injustice persists in our society. We still have so much work to do.

First, we want to make sure that as our community reacts to this news, students, faculty, and staff have the support that they need.
Synagogue Attack in California

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

We are saddened once again this morning after witnessing the anti-Semitic attack on the Congregation Chabad in Poway, California. That this attack occurred on the last day of the Passover holiday and only six months after the Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh heightens the pain of loss and the terror inflicted on this community. Furthermore, as our local Baltimore community has also experienced substantial violence this weekend, our thoughts are with the families of those impacted by the city shootings.

In the face of continued hate crimes, terror attacks, and violence in our community and across the world, we must remind ourselves to believe in the power of resilience. We must also continue to confront the tide of hate and prejudice that still runs strong in our country and around the globe. We must educate ourselves about and stand in solidarity with our neighbors of all backgrounds who are targeted by hate.

After the shooting, Chabad of Poway Rabbi Goldstein said, “A little bit of light pushes away a lot of darkness. We need a lot of light now.” We encourage you to join our UMBC Hillel community at the annual Freedom Seder this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. We are proud of this UMBC tradition, which celebrates our commitment to inclusive excellence and all types of diversity. This year’s theme is fittingly The Consequence of Hate, and we know our UMBC community will be strengthened by having this special space and time to grapple with the recent tragedies in our nation and around the world. Those with questions should reach out to UMBC Hillel Rabbi Jeremy Fierstien, rabbijeremy@umbc.edu.

We wish strength and comfort to our students, colleagues, friends, and family in the Jewish community around the world. While intended as satire, the content has harmed many in our community and may be viewed as creating a hostile environment that accepts and normalizes predatory sexual behavior and sexual assault.

In the context of UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence and community actions to create a safer and more caring campus climate for all, we are deeply concerned about discriminatory content presented in any context. The Retriever’s circulation of degrading and humiliating language about women and people who identify as LGBTQ, and its normalization of toxic masculinity, is unacceptable within UMBC’s values.

To build an inclusive community and invite dialogue around these important issues, we have reached out to The Retriever.
The Tragedy in New Zealand

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

This morning we woke to the tragic news of mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The attack, which was timed to coincide with Friday midday prayers, claimed the lives of 49 people and left 20—including children—seriously injured. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, the first responders who rushed to their aid, the people of Christchurch and New Zealand, and all those who have been affected by this senseless act.

Muslims traditionally gather for prayers at midday on Friday; this is called Jummah, or the Day of Assembly. This deadly violation of a sacred space during Jummah prayers is heartbreaking. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said this is “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.” We in America are sadly all too familiar with escalating violence and hate targeting community spaces including mosques, synagogues, churches, schools, and campuses. We must answer all hate crimes with a renewed commitment to advancing social justice, deepening our resolve to understand diverse experiences, and honoring the benefits such differences bring to our community and to humanity.

Community members seeking to explore these issues either personally or in community are encouraged to contact the Interfaith Center at 410-455-2686 or the UMBC Counseling Center at 410-455-2472; both will be open regular hours during spring break.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous

All-Gender Restrooms

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

As a campus community that is committed to inclusion and diversity, one of our shared values is having respect for the dignity of every member of our UMBC community. All members of our community and visitors to our campus should have access to safe restroom facilities that are configured and located in such a manner that no one has to be late to class, meetings, or campus events or to walk long distances across campus to find a restroom. Now is the time when we must put our values into action by moving forward on our commitment to making all-gender restroom facilities more widely available at UMBC.

In collaboration with the University Steering Committee and an All-Gender Restroom Steering Committee that will be comprised of students, faculty, and staff, including representatives from UMBC’s LGBTQ community, campus leadership will develop guidelines and implementation plans for moving towards this goal. These guidelines and implementation plans will apply to conversion of existing facilities, renovations, and new construction. This consultation process and resulting actions will enable us to move forward with appropriate rapidity, understanding that we will learn as we go and make adjustments as needed, to ensure that these changes meet the needs of our campus community.

In 2018, we completed designating all single-user restrooms on campus as all-gender restrooms. Currently there are 41 single-user all-gender restrooms in administration, academic, and student life facilities open to students and visitors, 16 single-user all-gender restrooms adjacent to shared areas in residence halls, and additional single-user all-gender restrooms located in buildings or areas of buildings not typically open to the public. A map highlighting public all-gender restrooms is available here. In addition, UMBC Facilities Management is continuing efforts to add more single-user all-gender restrooms in the University Center and the Retriever Learning Center in the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery. And the new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building, which is scheduled to open in time for the Fall 2019 semester, will have one single-user and two multi-user all gender restrooms.

Our next step will be to expand the availability of all-gender restrooms by identifying opportunities to designate existing multi-user restrooms as all-gender restrooms in campus buildings that currently lack single-user all-gender restrooms. Beginning this semester, we will develop initial guidelines to designate a small number of multi-user restrooms as all-gender restrooms. These guidelines and related implementation plans will serve as the starting point for assessing the best process for moving forward with this important effort.

We are committed to making all-gender restrooms available across our campus. We invite you to provide input or ask questions. If you would like to volunteer to be part of the process, please contact the All-Gender Restroom Steering Committee at agr@umbc.edu.

President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous
