Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. David Di Maria as Associate Vice Provost of International Education (IES), effective August 1, 2017.
Dr. Di Maria’s appointment successfully concludes a national search that was launched early in 2017. On behalf of the entire campus community, I wish to thank all the members of the search committee, chaired by Associate Dean Kathleen Carroll, for their diligent work and outstanding contribution to the future of international education at UMBC. I also wish to acknowledge the advice and counsel provided to the search committee by many members of the campus community.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank Interim Director of International Education Services Dr. Brian Souders who ably led the IES division during this period of transition.
Dr. Di Maria will join UMBC from Montana State University where he has been associate provost for international programs since 2014. Previously, Dr. Di Maria served on various positions of increasing responsibility in international activities at Kent State University and St. Cloud State University. Dr. Di Maria brings with him extensive experience in international education administration. He has been a principal investigator of many externally funded grants and has an extensive record of publications and presentations, including a recently published book titled, “Managing a Successful International Admissions Office: NAFSA’s Guide to International Admissions.”
As UMBC’s inaugural Associate Vice Provost of International Education, Dr. Di Maria will catalyze international engagement across the university and will work with campus leadership and the UMBC Community to expand international activities and opportunities for our faculty and students. He will supervise all activities and programs in the Office of International Education Services, including visa processes for international research scholars, faculty, and students; education abroad activities; and short-term faculty-led international programs.
Dr. Di Maria received bachelor degrees in English and International Studies and a Master of Education in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He received a Doctor of Education in Higher Education (International Education Cohort) from the University of Minnesota.
Please join me in welcoming and supporting Dr. Di Maria as he transitions into his new role at UMBC.
