Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am writing to inform you that, after nearly a decade of outstanding service to our community, Ben Lowenthal, Associate Vice President for Financial Services, will be leaving UMBC to take up a new position as Vice President for Administration and Finance at Towson University. While his service and leadership at UMBC will be missed, Mr. Lowenthal’s new position represents a well-deserved professional opportunity, and I know you will join me in wishing him well in his new endeavor.
As UMBC’s Associate Vice President for Financial Services, Mr. Lowenthal built a strong leadership team and led the creation of a more collaborative and customer-oriented culture in UMBC’s Financial Services, including improving business processes, technology, and services. Working with colleagues across the university, he helped to developed high-functioning shared services centers in several colleges and divisions and created a strong financial literacy program that provides support to students and other members of the campus community.
He has used his knowledge of technology and finance to develop additional financial reporting and analysis tools, including the REX Finance reporting tool and the Whitebirch multi-year forecasting reporting and analysis tool. Mr. Lowenthal was instrumental in creating UMBC's Business Administrators group, which meets each semester to discuss developments in administrative and financial areas on campus.
Prior to joining UMBC, Mr. Lowenthal held leadership positions at three other University System of Maryland campuses.
On behalf of the entire UMBC community, I would like to thank Mr. Lowenthal for his significant contributions to UMBC over the years.
Lynne Schaefer, Vice President for Administration & Finance
