Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
I am writing to inform you that the university is reviewing the status of UMBC’s physical education requirement for the undergraduate baccalaureate degree.
On November 13, 2018, as an information item, the Faculty Senate was presented with a draft resolution that would support an administrative proposal to eliminate the current physical education requirement. We anticipate that a final vote on this resolution will take place during the December 11, 2018 meeting of Faculty Senate. If the Faculty Senate supports the elimination of the requirement, an official notification of a change to the undergraduate degree requirements will be communicated to the campus with the change becoming effective for the Winter 2019 session and the following semesters.
As you work with students for the upcoming Winter 2019 and Spring 2019 semesters please keep in mind that, at this time, the physical education requirement still exists although currently under review. All undergraduate degree-seeking students are encouraged to plan accordingly until the future status of physical education requirement is formally decided and communicated to the campus community.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and academic programs.
Philip Rous, Provost
Katharine Cole, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs
