Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
We are deeply saddened by the senseless act of violence that took place at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte yesterday. This morning, I sent a message to Chancellor Dubois expressing the UMBC community’s sympathy for the families and friends of the victims, others directly affected, and the broader university community.
Unfortunately, violence and tragedies at universities and schools around the country remind us of our own safety and the safety of others in the UMBC community. We want to assure you that UMBC is committed to maintaining a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and we value your partnership in making UMBC a safe place to learn, live, and work.
Ensuring a safe campus begins with understanding our emergency preparedness plan and where to find information, resources, and trainings to educate community members on how to respond in the event of an emergency. We encourage all students, faculty, and staff take a moment to review our emergency preparedness documentation and trainings and sign up for our E2Campus text alert system.
Tragedies impact community members in different ways, and we want to be certain that students, faculty, and staff who may need support as a result of this incident have information about available resources. Faculty and staff can request counseling through the Inova Employee Assistance Program by calling 1-800-346-0110. Students seeking support can access the Counseling Center at 410-455-2472 or, at the Shady Grove campus, the USG Center for Counseling and Consultation at 301-738-6273.
Thank you for all you do every day to keep UMBC a safe and caring community of inquiring minds.
President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous
