Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
Tim Hall has announced he will leave his position as director of athletics at UMBC to begin a similar role at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) on August 5. Please join me in thanking Tim for his contributions to our university community in his six years at UMBC.
In 2018-19, our Retrievers captured four America East Conference championships, capping off years of achievement during Tim’s tenure. Under his leadership, the men’s soccer team advanced to the 2015 College Cup (national semi-finals). In the spring of 2016, he hired Ryan Odom to lead the men’s basketball program and, two seasons later, the program shocked the world by capturing an America East Conference title and becoming the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships.
The women’s soccer, softball, and men’s lacrosse squads have captured league championships under Tim’s watch. Moreover, the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have continued their remarkable success, earning multiple Coastal Collegiate and America East titles over the past six years.
Tim also led the move of the athletics program from the Retriever Activities Center to the $85 million
UMBC Event Center in February of 2018. Most importantly, he has presided over the department’s strong academic success: UMBC scholar-athletes had an average GPA of 3.09 in 2018-19.
In announcing his move, Tim shared, "While Beth, the kids, and I are excited to begin this new journey, we are also sad to be leaving UMBC and Baltimore. So many people have been so good to us over the last six years; it is difficult to express how grateful we have been for this wonderful experience. I am so proud of what #RetrieverNation has been able to achieve over the past six years in every aspect of our program.”
UMBC will launch a national search to identify the next director of athletics.
