Dear Members of the UMBC Community,
After 38 years of service with the State of Maryland and UMBC, Rochelle Sanders, Director of Benefits, Compensation and HRIS, will retire from UMBC, effective December 1, 2019. Please join us in celebrating her career and outstanding service at an open house reception on Wednesday, November 6, 3 - 5 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom.
Rochelle began her career with the State of Maryland as an office secretary in the Department of Personnel in 1981. In 1988, she joined UMBC as an office secretary for the Department of Human Resources. She has since served as a benefits specialist as well as Assistant Director of Benefits and Compensation; and has held her current position since 2009. During her time with the department, Rochelle earned a bachelor’s degree in English from UMBC and went on to attain a master’s degree in Human Resources Management from UMUC.
Rochelle has been an invaluable member of the campus community, providing human resources advice, assistance, and consultation to campus leaders, supervisors, and employees. She has represented HR in numerous interdepartmental and campus-wide projects, initiatives, and committees. As a key campus liaison to the University System of Maryland for classification, compensation and benefits issues, she has advocated for UMBC and its employees in the development and enhancement of system-wide policies and standards.
While we may find it hard to imagine facing our future challenges and opportunities without her, let us keep in mind Rochelle’s own words: “We have the grit and greatness to embrace it all… together.”
We hope you will join us in expressing our gratitude for Rochelle's contributions to the UMBC community. Please stop by and wish her well.
