Starting on Friday, November 1, 2019, UMBC will again participate in two of Baltimore’s most celebrated festivals: Light City and the Baltimore Book Festival, united for the first time in 2019 as Brilliant Baltimore. The event is a dynamic celebration of light and literature taking place at the Inner Harbor and in neighborhoods across the city from November 1-10, 2019.

The Empowered University, Sunday, November 3, 2 p.m., USM Columbus Center -- UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski will discuss his new book, The Empowered University: Shared Leadership, Culture Change, and Academic Success, written with Provost Philip Rous and Peter Henderson. The book examines how university communities support academic success by cultivating an empowering institutional culture.

SPARK Gallery, November 1-10, 5-10 p.m., USM Columbus Center -- Throughout the entire festival, make sure to stop by this exciting and interactive gallery. This collaboration between UMBC, Towson University, and PNC Bank features artists including UMBC’s Colette Searls, Connie Francis Parks, Evan Tedlock, Lisa Moren, Lynn Cazabon, Timothy Nohe, and Vin Grabill. Performers include the UMBC Jazz, UMBC New Music Ensemble, Umbilicus Percussion Ensemble, Lisa Cella and Stephen Bradley; and a dance performance by UMBC students choreographed by faculty members Ann Sofie Clemmensen and Carol Hess.

Word & Image, Saturday, November 2, 6 p.m., World Trade Center -- A panel discussion featuring contributors to The Light Ekphrastic, an online publication that pairs artists and writers. UMBC’s Jenny O’Grady, editor of UMBC Magazine, and Timothy Nohe, professor of visual arts and director of the Center for Innovation in Research, and Creativity in the Arts, will co-moderate the panel, which includes Melissa Cormier, M.F.A. ’17, visual arts, and Katie Feild ’05, visual arts.
- UMBC Light City Reception, Saturday, November 9, 4 – 9 p.m., USM Columbus Center -- Join the UMBC community for light refreshments and a great view of the Baltimore Harbor and Light City exhibits. Registration is encouraged.
