We want to update you on planning for the fall semester. UMBC leaders are working closely with colleagues from the University System of Maryland (USM) and other campuses to explore a range of options for the delivery of fall instruction. We are carefully considering options to have some on-campus instruction in the fall—to the extent possible and in ways that protect the health and safety of our campus community. USM Chancellor Jay Perman recently announced that USM will work with campuses to develop a framework for the fall semester by the end of May.
As we work to protect the safety and health of all members of our community, we will identify the conditions that must exist within the state and on our campus for students, faculty, and staff to return safely and assess how those conditions will affect our academic and administrative operations. We will use state and federal public health guidelines to inform our evidence-based decision-making. We will also continue to work closely with local health departments, faculty, students, and staff, including shared governance leadership.
A Fall Planning Coordinating Committee, led by Provost Philip Rous and Vice President for Administration and Finance Lynne Schaefer, is assessing the feasibility of various fall semester scenarios in areas including academics, student life, research, operations, and events and engagement. Faculty, staff, and students, including shared governance leaders, are serving in these work groups. We will continue to keep the campus informed about this developing work.
