Maurice Berger, a beloved member of the UMBC community, passed away on March 22 from complications of COVID-19. A path-breaking art historian and curator, a fierce advocate for social justice, and an exceptionally caring human being, Berger was chief curator and research professor at UMBC’s Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture. Through his exhibitions and writings, his work embraced and exemplified our university values. He compelled us to look honestly at issues of inequity, race, and their representations in visual culture. (Read the campus announcement of Berger’s passing here.)
An online memorial event to celebrate Maurice Berger’s life and work will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6. Organized by the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School in partnership with Berger’s husband, Marvin Heiferman, “On Race, Representation, and White Lies: A Tribute to Maurice Berger” will feature readings, discussions, and performances in three sessions at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. We invite the campus community to attend and to celebrate Berger’s life and remarkable legacy.
