Join Professor Tania Lizarazo's Fall seminar Theory in the Flesh: Disability, Gender and Race in Latin America as guest speakers visit on select dates to discuss race, gender, colonialism, disability, and more in Latin America.

"Theory in the Flesh" will explore narratives that theorize embodied knowledge about intersectional oppressions in Latin America through different genres in the context of globalization, colonialism, neoliberalism, and the ongoing genocide and marginalization of Indigenous and Black people.


Participating in conversations with Latin American/Latinx artists, organizers and scholars will enhance students' learning experiences.

Karla Tatiana Vasquez, food writer, recipe developer, and food stylist

In conversation with Krystal C. Mack, food designer and artist

In 2015, first-generation Salvadoran American, Karla T. Vasquez, began an online project to document recipes like the ones her mother made during her childhood. Over time, the project grew to include not only recipes, but also stories from the women who created them, offering a portrait of life for Salvadoran women both before the civil war and after their arrival in the United States. Vasquez will discuss The SalviSoul Cookbook and her efforts to preserve the food and stories of Salvadoran moms, aunts, grandmothers, and friends.

It is time to say goodbye to our logo for the past 10 years or more! It meant a lot to the organization, but we were all ready for a new logo that represented our communities.

It was designed by a student at UMBC, Federico Caicedo Florez (Visual and Media Arts major). We are including information about the artist and his inspiration for the logo. Join us in congratulating Federico and his artwork. The logo file is attached, please feel free to share it. It has been formally approved by UMBC branding, so we can start using it. 



“I was majoring in pre-computer science, but starting next semester, I will be a Visual and Media Arts major at UMBC. My cultural background is Colombian, specifically from Bogotá and Boyaca, and it greatly influenced my approach to designing the logo. I aimed to create a design that embodies the colors of the UMBC community. I struggled to find inspiration for the background until I saw my mom's "Mochila Wayuu." The vibrant colors of this traditional Indigenous textile inspired me to incorporate elements that represent our Indigenous roots (below I attached some inspirations). At the top, I added a book, symbolizing learning, and included a globe with countries from around the world. Initially, I considered highlighting only Spanish-speaking countries, but I decided to include all countries to reflect the global presence of Spanish speakers.

Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity and I look forward to connecting with the LHFA community soon."

Thank you everyone that participated in Immigrant Appreciation this year. We had a full day of events and are grateful that many student organizations (undergraduate and graduate) participated, as well as different departments, programs, offices, and faculty across UMBC. Please check out our photo album and add to it if you have any pictures. 


This is the third time we have co-hosted an Immigrant Appreciation day on campus and always on May 1st. The first one was in 2016 and the second one in 2019. We have continuously collaborated with our colleagues in the Asian and Asian American Faculty Staff Council and we hope to continue to do so.

There are many reasons, and you may have your own, why we wanted to celebrate our immigrant communities on campus and beyond, but this year, we wanted to show our appreciation for the immigrant workers on campus, our immigrant grad students, undergrads, and our communities’ histories and stories.

We also wanted to honor the immigrant workers we lost in the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse this year. We wanted to honor: Miguel Luna, Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, José Mynor López, Carlos Hernández and Alejandro Hernández Fuentes. For this reason we also commissioned a painting by UMBC artist Ghazal Mojtahedi. Students were able to add to her art a series of messages in different languages to honor the workers. Thank you Dr. María Sánchez for making this collaboration possible. 



Thank you to all of our LHFA members for supporting this event. We were asked many times throughout the day if we were planning to do this again next year. What do we think?

Hello Everyone! This post is to flag that immigrant appreciation day is 1 week out! LHFA and AAAFSC are co-organizing "UMBC Immigrant Recognition Day" again this year with student groups on campus (HLSU, SACNAS, etc.). The event is scheduled for this upcoming Wednesday, May 1st. 


We also want to flag that May 1st 10:00-10:50am, ITE 238 there will be the Graduate Student Panel: "Navigating Grad School as an Immigrant" hosted by the Latinx & Hispanic Graduate Student Association (us), the Black Graduate Student Organization, and the Nigerian Graduate Student Association. A few discussion topics include: 1) what are issues faced by immigrant grad students, 2) how does being an immigrant shape the grad school experience, and 3) how do we build a support system. These is not an exhaustive list, but can serve as a starting point to guide the conversation.
