15th Annual Imagining America Conference

America Will Be!
The Art and Power of "Weaving Our We"

September 30th - October 3rd

Baltimore, Maryland

Hosted by UMBC

Co-sponsored by MICA and Morgan State University

Have you been wondering how to connect your learning, teaching, research, and work to meeting society’s complex challenges? You’re not alone! This fall, UMBC will host the national conference of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life. Imagining America is a national consortium of colleges, universities, and organizations dedicated to advancing the public and civic purposes of arts, humanities, and design.

From September 30 to October 3, 2015, join faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, community organizers, and artists from all over the country who use scholarly, artistic, social, and entrepreneurial resources to address pressing challenges. As we collectively find new footing in our examination of real-world issues, Imagining America provides a source for information and ideas in support of engaged undergraduate and graduate pedagogies, public scholarship, and institutional-change initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to see what this work is all about and meet scholars from across the nation—and it is happening right in the center of Baltimore City, and here on the UMBC campus!

Imagining America chose UMBC as the 2015 conference host six months before the nation turned its attention to Baltimore in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death. Our selection is a testament to the long record of powerful civic work underway at UMBC, and to campus leaders’ commitment to fostering civic agency, engaged scholarship, and a culture of innovation and inclusive excellence. UMBC’s Imagining America planning team, consisting of staff, faculty, alumni, and graduate and undergraduate students, has been leading a conference organizing process that includes Baltimore grassroots organizations, non-profit organizations, and other Imagining America university partners MICA, Morgan, and Towson to ensure sustainable impact in Baltimore beyond 2015. Post-conference organizing is already underway!

The LLC is well represented in IA as some of our faculty and alumni have lead the conference's organizing committee:

Drs. Bev Bickel, Kimberly Moffit, Romy Hübler, David Hoffman, and Joby Taylor

Also, members of our LLC community will present in some of the panels of IA:

Dr. Craig Saper, Dr. Rita Turner, Shirley Basfield-Dunlap, Diane Kuthy, Rachel Carter, Ryan Donnelly, and Shawntay Stocks.

The UMBC Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship

    <Tagline>Application Deadline: Friday, October 30, 2015</Tagline>

The Dissertation Fellowship is designed to provide doctoral candidates at UMBC an opportunity to devote the necessary concentration and attention towards finishing the writing of their dissertations. The Fellowship is specifically designed for students with full-time jobs off-campus, for those without any financial support who are making steady progress with their writing, and for whom having additional time and resources would permit them to complete the process more expeditiously. This Fellowship is not available as an option for students with available graduate assistantship support.

The Dissertation Fellowship could provide promising doctoral candidates with financial support so that they may reduce their current obligations and partially offset any reductions in salary or increases in expenses. No additional work assignments other than work on the dissertation are to be associated with this support.

Priority will be given to students who demonstrate that the Fellowship will allow them the needed time to complete their writing and to make revisions in time to defend the work within a realistic but expeditious time frame. Awards will be made to students who have demonstrated a commitment to provide at least 20 hours per week for an entire academic semester to writing the dissertation.

Dissertation Fellowship awards are available for Spring 2016. The duration of an award is for one semester. The maximum level of support for Spring is a total stipend of $8,239.88 per Fellowship plus tuition remission for two credits of 899.

To be considered for a Dissertation Fellowship, the Ph.D. candidate must:

be in good academic standing;

provide a letter of support from the Chair of the Dissertation Committee that

1) describes the state of the dissertation and the probable impact of receipt of the Fellowship on the progress toward completion; and,

2) verifies that no UMBC-administered financial support is available for the student;

provide, if employed outside the university, written evidence from the student’s employer indicating the employer’s willingness to reduce job time and duties in order for the student to participate in the Fellowship;

submit a dissertation abstract of no more than two pages in length; and

submit a 1-2 page management plan signed by the Chair of the Dissertation Committee describing the status of the dissertation work, the steps required to complete the work, and the feasible time line for completion.

          Applications for Spring 2016 Dissertation Fellowships will be accepted by the Office of the Associate Dean of the Graduate School until 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 30, 2015. A committee consisting of three members of the Graduate School Leadership Team will review applications and announce recipients of the Fellowship by November 6, 2015. Selection will be based on the extent of convincing evidence that the award will provide the critical element need to complete the dissertation

Mini-courses for Undergrads:

1) Harshad Numbers and Sage Programming

A Harshad number is a positive integer that is divisible by the sum of its digits. The word “Harshad” comes from the Sanskrit harsa (joy) + da (give), meaning joy-giver, which was defined by the Indian mathematician D.R. Kaprekar. All one digit numbers are Harshad numbers and it is fairly simple to determine which two digit numbers are Harshad. In 1994, H. Grundman generalized the concept to b-Harshad (or b-Niven) numbers. Simply put, for b > 1, a b-Harshad number is a positive integer that is divisible by the sum of the digits of its base b expansion. The mini-course will provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to learn about Harshad numbers and how to compute some of their properties using the freely available mathematical program Sage. No prior programing experience is required. Prerequisite: An undergraduate algebra or number theory course.

2) An Introduction to the Theory of Sandpiles

The sandpile model developed by Bak, Tang, and Wiesenfeld in 1987 is a mathematical model first used to exemplify the concept of self-organized criticality (SOC). SOC is a property of certain dynamical systems that naturally evolve toward critical states and it is considered to be one of the mechanisms by which complexity arises in nature. The abelian sandpile model 8.5.15 introduced by Dhar in 1990 is a special class of sandpile model defined on a combinatorial graph whose dynamic structure is encoded in a finite abelian group known as the sandpile group. This algebraic structure has played a central role in the study of diverse properties of the abelian sandpile model. Moreover, the sandpile group has also been an important object of study in several distinct areas of mathematics, including algebraic combinatorics, algebraic, tropical and arithmetic geometry, the theory of computation, and the study of pattern formation. In this mini-course, we will give an introduction to the theory of sandpiles. In particular, we will study the interactions between the combinatorics of the graph, the algebraic information of the sandpile group and the dynamics of the abelian sandpile model. Prerequisite: One undergraduate course in linear algebra.

AFTER THE MATH INSTITUTE – ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AT SACNAS

If you plan to attend activities after President Hrabowski’s talk, at the SACNAS Conference – which begins on Thurs., Oct. 29 – you will need to register for the SACNAS Conference and pay the SACNAS registration fee, which is $275 for one day and goes up to $440 (see http://www.2015sacnas.org/events/2015-sacnas-national-conference/custom-36-6170a953907b4808ab42c5ec7ec147b6.aspx). Note: Acceptance to the Modern Math Workshop provides funding for you to attend the workshop on Wednesday and Thursday. If you want to attend other activities at SACNAS, you will have to register for SACNAS directly and secure another source of funding. The MMW pays accepted applicants’ registration for the Wednesday and Thursday Modern Math Institute only.
