Steven Dashiell awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship
at American University
Steven
Dashiell (LLC '20) has been selected for a Postdoctoral Fellowship for
Academic Diversity at American University in Washington DC. "These
positions are designed to support the development of early-career scholars who
show promise of distinguished research careers and who are from sectors of the
population historically underrepresented on the professorial faculties of U.S.
colleges and universities."
Steven
will hold a dual appointment; he is assigned to both the Department of
Sociology (under Dr. Celine-Marie Pascale) and the Game Lab (under Dr. Andrew
Phelps). He will be doing research on the nature of discourse in
male-dominated subcultures, in addition to game theory research on tabletop
role-playing games. The appointment is for two years.
Steven
personally and deeply thanks his program advisor, Dr. Christine Mallinson, and
dissertation advisor, Dr. Carole McCann, for helping him to make this dream
appointment a reality.

Tunisia Lumpkin Successfully Presents
her Dissertation Research Proposal
The LLC Program is pleased to announce that Tunisia Lumpkin of
Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on May 17, 2021.
Her
project is titled, "What I Like: Chronicles of Black Males' Perspectives on Black Women's Hair." After Tunisia's presentation, she had a
substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Tunisia's
committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

recently hired as the Partnerships Programs Associate at Alternate

Katie Morris Successfully Defends her Dissertation
On May 3, 2021 Katherine J. Morris of LLC Cohort 18 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of

their Dissertation
On April 23, 2021 J Inscoe of LLC Cohort 19 successfully defended their dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of
Philosophy.
Their virtual
defense went very smoothly and they gave an excellent presentation of their
dissertation research, "Sonic Waves of Grain: Paul Harvey's American Evangelism."

LLC's New Visiting Lecturer and Course Offerings this Fall
in Identity and Ethnographic Methods
Dr. Rebeca Gamez’s research interests include relational and comparative race and ethnicity, space and place, immigration, and educational inequality, with a focus on how racialized and minoritized youth navigate their schooling, learning, and ethnoracial identities. Additionally, she has a broader interest in English Language Arts teaching and curriculum, teacher education, and critical qualitative research methodologies. She was an American Educational Research Association (AERA) Minority Dissertation Fellow. Prior to earning her doctorate in Education at Johns Hopkins University, she was a middle school literacy teacher in Trenton, New Jersey. She also has extensive experience in grassroots community organizing around financial justice, immigrant rights, and educational equity issues.
Dr. Gamez will teach two courses this fall for LLC, as well as contribute to programmatic activities and initiatives.
LLC 610: Identity as Cultural Practice, Thursdays 4:30 – 7:00 pm (hybrid mode)
In this course we will define, discuss, and study identity as a cultural practice from the perspective of many disciplines and interdisciplinary fields involved in LLC. From theoretical explorations of the complexities and challenges in current identity scholarship and research to methodological approaches across the disciplines to the praxis of identity research, we will engage in a collaborative inquiry on how identity can be understood as a cultural practice anchored in particular times and spaces.

LLC 650: Ethnographic Methods, Mondays 4:30 – 7:00 pm (hybrid mode)
In this course, we will cover theoretical perspectives, research techniques and design, data management and analysis, and ethical questions pertinent to ethnographic research and qualitative research more broadly. Additionally, we will explore how to engage in ethnographic research in contemporary times, where the arrival of COVID-19 presents new obstacles to conducting ethnographic and qualitative research. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct original qualitative research as it relates to language, literacy, and culture.
