Tym Wowk Successfully Defends his Dissertation
On April 30, 2020 Tymofey Wowk of LLC Cohort 15
successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of
Philosophy.
His virtual
defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his
dissertation research, "A Path toward Education Equity: Factors Facilitating the Persistence of Racial/Ethnic Minority Students at Community Colleges."

Kimberly Moffitt is Promoted to New Rank
We are pleased to announce that after a year-long evaluative process
the LLC Program's Director, Dr. Kimberly Moffitt, is being promoted to the rank
of Professor, effective July 1, 2020.
Beyond the traditional quantitative and qualitative criteria
for promotion used at UMBC and by our Language, Literacy & Culture Doctoral
Program, all the evaluators echoed the external
reviewers' sentiments that her scholarship is "rigorous," "original," and "important," highlighting her community-engaged and participatory-action work as a public intellectual and educational advocate.
Dr. Moffitt's research is in the area of race
and gender representation in mass media and pop culture.
Please help us congratulate her on becoming a full professor!

Sedrick Smith Successfully Defends his Dissertation!
On March 30, 2020 Sedrick Smith of LLC Cohort 18 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy.
His defense went very smoothly, despite its being the first virtual defense for the LLC Program. He was gratified by the large remote audience, which included his children, who under other circumstances would have been at school.
He gave an excellent presentation of his dissertation research, "Depictions versus Reality: Countering the television mediated narratives of Black teachers in Baltimore."

Montia Gardner Successfully - and Virtually - Presents
her Dissertation Proposal
LLC is pleased to announce that Montia Gardner, of
Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation
research proposal to her committee on March 13, 2020. She was the first LLC student to virtually meet her committee on-line for this purpose.
Her project is titled, "The Capital Concept: The Role of Social Capital in Pursuit of Educational Advancement." After Montia's presentation, she had a substantive
discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her
committee agreed that her project is worthy of doctoral research and
helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the
research and writing.

The 2020 Inaugural Cedric Herring Symposium
CANCELLED -- March 24th event -- CANCELLED
Due to guidance from the University System of Maryland and the Governor's Office, this symposium will not be held this spring. We are planning to reschedule it in the fall.

The LLC Program is honoring the legacy of the late Dr. Cedric Herring, former director and professor of the program, by sponsoring an annual symposium in his name.
Our event begins at 11:00am on March 24th in the AOK Library and will be comprised of four panel discussions about the intersectionality that exists between critical diversity and career development and mentorship. The symposium will culminate with a keynote address by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi at 5:00pm. Dr. Kendi's latest book, How to be an Antiracist, will be on sale at a book signing immediately after his speech.

Conversation about Michelle Obama and the FLOTUS Effect
Book Release Party and Panel Discussion on February 27th
Join Drs. Kimberly Moffitt (LLC) and Heather Harris (Stevenson University) to celebrate the release of their co-edited volume, Michelle Obama and the FLOTUS Effect, along with contributors Sherella Cupid (LLC cohort 18), Shawntay Stocks (LLC PhD ‘19), Tahira Mahdi (PSY PhD ‘18), and Leticia D. Williams (Howard University PhD). This event will be moderated by Sonya Crosby (LLC cohort 20).
Their book emphasizes the significance of Michelle Obamain relation to her politics and positionality as the first African American woman to serve as First Lady of the United States of America.
Panelists will:
Reflect on their chapters
Offer insights about her evolving legacy
Provide motivations for their involvement
Describe the publishing process
Discuss collaborative research projects
Q & A session to follow.

Laurel Burggraf Bassett Successfully Presents
her Dissertation Proposal
LLC is pleased to announce that Laurel Burggraf Bassett, of Cohort 20, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her committee on January 31, 2020. Her topic is titled, "Daggers and Stars: Putting the Paratext back in Fingal."
After Laurel's presentation, she and her committee had a substantive discussion surrounding her topic and methodological approach. It was determined that her project was worthy of doctoral study and provided useful advice on how to move forward with her research.

J. Inscoe Successfully Presents their Dissertation Proposal
