  <Title>Tym Wowk Successfully Defends his Dissertation</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>On April 30, 2020 Tymofey Wowk of LLC Cohort 15 
    successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of
     Philosophy.</div><div><br></div><div>His virtual 
    defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his

  <Title>Kimberly Moffitt is Promoted to New Rank</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>We are pleased to announce that after a year-long evaluative process 
    the LLC Program's Director, Dr. Kimberly Moffitt, is being promoted to the rank 
    of Professor, effective July 1, 2020.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Beyond the traditional quantitative and qualitative criteria
    for promotion used at UMBC and by our Language, Literacy &amp; Culture Doctoral
    Program, all the evaluators echoed the external
    reviewers' sentiments that her scholarship is "rigorous," "original," and "important," highlighting her community-engaged and participatory-action work as a public intellectual and educational advocate.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Dr. Moffitt's research is in the area of race
    and gender representation in mass media and pop culture. </div><div><br></div><div>Please help us congratulate her on becoming a full professor!<br></div><div><br></div><br></div>

  <Title>Sedrick Smith Successfully Defends his Dissertation!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>On March 30, 2020 Sedrick Smith of LLC Cohort 18 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy.</div><div><br></div><div>His defense went very smoothly, despite its being the first virtual defense for the LLC Program.   <Title>Montia Gardner Successfully - and Virtually - Presents</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>LLC is pleased to announce that Montia Gardner, of 
    Cohort 19, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation 
    research proposal to her committee on March 13, 2020. She was the first LLC student to virtually meet her committee on-line for this purpose. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Her project is titled, "<span>The Capital Concept: The Role of Social Capital in Pursuit of Educational Advancement." </span> After Montia's presentation, she had a substantive 
    discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her 
    committee agreed that her project is worthy of doctoral research and 
    helped her consider some key issues as she moves forward into the

We are planning to reschedule it in the fall.  <br></div><div><br></div><div>----------------------------------------------------------------------------<br></div><div><br></div><div>The LLC Program is honoring the legacy of the late <strong>Dr. Cedric Herring</strong>, former director and professor of the program, by sponsoring an annual symposium in his name. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Our event begins at 11:00am on March 24th in the AOK Library and will be comprised of four panel discussions about the intersectionality that exists between critical diversity and career development and mentorship. The symposium will culminate with a keynote address by <strong>Dr. Ibram X. Kendi</strong> at 5:00pm.     <div class="html-content"><div>LLC is pleased to announce that Katie Morris, of Cohort 18, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her committee on February 18, 2020. Her hermeneutic phenomenology project is titled, "Being Called to Social Work: What Latina Women Carry." After Katie's presentation, she had a substantive discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work.
