Dr. Renetta Tull receives the 2016 Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity

Congratulations to Dr. Renetta Tull, director of Maryland’s PROMISE Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP), for being the recipient of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) 2016 Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity!

Dr. Renetta Tull receives the Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity at the ABET Awards Gala in Baltimore, MD on October 28, 2016. Photo: Courtesy of Dr. Renetta Tull’s wordpress website

On October 28, 2016, the ABET Awards Gala was held in Baltimore, MD to award and recognize members for their outstanding achievements. One of these awards, the Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity, was awarded to Dr. Renetta Tull. The Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity is awarded to a recipient who resembles Claire L. Felbinger in advocating diversity. Claire Felbinger was a member of the Board of Delegates where she was the first person to bring up the topic and significance of diversity. Since then, she has been an active and influential advocate on diversity, including the creation of a policy on diversity. She passed away in 2008, but her advocacy in diversity continues to live on. Each year, ABET presents the Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity to recognize people who walk in her footsteps and carry out the same goals and visions.

Dr. Renetta Tull was awarded this prestigious award for her “visionary leadership as founding director of the PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate and her commitment to achieving greater diversity and inclusion in technical fields.” PROMISE AGEP was initially founded in 2003, which was an alliance between the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), and the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). As stated on our website, “PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP is a university system-wide effort for the state of Maryland to facilitate underrepresented STEM graduate student and postdoctoral professional development and pathways to careers.” In 2013, PROMISE AGEP expanded to outreach to the entire University System of Maryland (USM) and to postdoctoral fellows. The new expansion also included a new Professors in Training (PROF-IT) program, which allowed graduate students to teach at universities within USM, Anne Arundel Community College, the Community College of Baltimore County, and Ana G Mendez University Capital Area Campus.

PROMISE AGEP provides professional development seminars/workshops, conference opportunities, and networking opportunities. It is also an excellent support system for all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Our mission is to help increase graduate student retention, provide a support system and a sense of belonging for graduate students, particularly underrepresented minorities in STEM fields, and increase the graduation rate of underrepresented minorities. Through PROMISE AGEP, Dr. Renetta Tull is helping to achieve greater diversity and inclusion in technical fields.

Congratulations, Dr. Renetta Tull, for receiving the 2016 Claire L. Felbinger’s Award!

Details as per the CIRTL website:

Why does Universal Design matter? Course design based on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles provides a framework and strategies that recognize the unique backgrounds, experiences, and abilities of our students and helps us design courses that are inclusive and accessible to our diverse learners. Originating from the field of architecture, UDL made the physical world accessible to people with disabilities, but also demonstrated how everyone can benefit from these principles.

What will the workshop cover? This workshop will assist participants in preparing to teach new courses and/or revise existing courses using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and practices. Participants will have the opportunity to clarify student learning outcomes, learn about teaching methods that can reach a broader range of learners, and consider ways to apply UDL principles to reduce barriers to learning in their courses.

Facilitators: Dr. Carolyn L. Sandoval, Instructional Consultant, Texas A&M University; Vernee Butterfield, Texas A&M University.

Who’s invited? Anyone can register for our workshop, though students from CIRTL institutions will be given preference. Registration will be open Monday, October 24 through Monday, November 7.

What’s required of me before and after the workshop? Prior to the workshop, participants will be provided with a sample course syllabus and will be asked to review and document initial impressions related to course design. Following the workshop, participants will be asked to incorporate concepts learned into a revised syllabus and upload the revisions into Moodle for peer review. Instructors estimate these pre- and post-workshop tasks will take about 2 hours.

Where will the workshop take place? We’ll use Moodle to host assignments and discussion boards before and after the workshop; you’ll automatically receive a Moodle account once you’re enrolled in the workshop. The live session on the 16th, which everyone is required to attend, will take place in Blackboard Collaborate. To participate in the Blackboard Collaborate sessions, you will need to download the necessary software and have access to headphones and a computer with a microphone and camera.

Accessibility: We want to make this workshop accessible to as many people as possible. If you have questions about the workshop content, how to register, or how to use the required technology, contact kdiamond3 AT wisc.edu.

2016 Solicitation 2: Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Monday November 21, 2016.

The SCGSR program provides doctoral dissertation/thesis research opportunities for graduate students at DOE national laboratories. Details about the program and online application can be found athttp://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2016 Solicitation 2. Applications are due 5:00pm ET on Monday November 21, 2016.

Starting from 2015 Solicitation 2, the SCGSR program is open to graduate students with Permanent Resident status, in addition to U.S. Citizens, who meet all other eligibility requirements. Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: http://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.

The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis/dissertation while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory during the award period.

The Office of Science expects to make approximately 50 awards in 2016 Solicitation 2, for project periods beginning anytime between June 1, 2017 and October 2, 2017.

Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to about 160 graduate awardees from over 75 different universities to conduct thesis research at DOE national laboratories across the nation.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories, and the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).

For any questions, please contact the SCGSR Program Manager, Dr. Ping Ge,atsc.scgsr@science.doe.gov.
