Three LLC students celebrate Candidacy milestone

On November 19th, the Graduate School hosted a Candidacy Celebration for doctoral students who have achieved candidacy over the past year. Three LLC students were honored, pictured above.

LLC is pleased to announce that May Chung, of LLC Cohort 17, successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her full committee on November 22, 2019. Her topic is titled, “Mothers' Motivations and Family Language Policy in a Mandarin-English Dual Language School."

After May’s presentation, she and her committee had a substantive discussion surrounding her topic and methodological approach. They determined that the project was worthy of doctoral study and provided useful advice on how to move forward with her research.

Sedrick Smith (cohort 18) has recenlty published an Op-Ed titled "Baltimore City College students 'crushed it'" in the Baltimore Sun. In the Op-Ed, Sedrick provides examples of how students in Baltimore are 'crushing' the perception of public schools around the country.

Sedrick is chair of the social studies department and a varsity girls soccer and lacrosse coach at Baltimore City College and an affiliate faculty member of literarcy education at Loyola University of Maryland.

Steven Dashiell (Cohort 16) has recently published a blog entry titled “Resolving the Study of Geek, or What to Do When You Become “That Brony Researcher”” In the article, Steven explains how he has been able to identify and work with his dissertation topic. He mentions how “thinking strategically” from an early stage, an idea instilled by his LLC advisor, opens the path to doctoral students to engage with research and to identify themes that will become crucial in their dissertation.
