Beginning in the fall of 2016, LLC students have the opportunity to work alongside an affiliate faculty member of the LLC Program on that professor's research. This opportunity is designed for part-time LLC students and those who do not have a graduate assistantship.

The Program is about Research, not Red Tape:

• Largely informal and voluntary
• Two to three hours per week
• One semester commitment, but renewable
• Mutually beneficial (limited clerical tasks)
• Small LLC stipend for students

LLC students and affiliate faculty members can seek each other out through the People tab of the LLC website.

Once a faculty member and a student are ready to initiate an apprenticeship, please complete this form and return it to the LLC Program office or email it to llc@umbc.edu.

For students to be eligible for a stipend, the form should be completed within the first three weeks of the start of a semester. We also invite LLC students to update their research interests on this Google spreadsheet.

We are proud to report the success of the 2nd LLC Gradate Student Conference: #Intellectual Activist Movement(s): Reconnecting University Scholarship and Community Action.

At least 50 people participated in a conversation on the value of being an intellectual/activist: on lessons learned, on unanswered questions, on how changing socio-cultural landscapes interact with our work, and on what it means to be an intellectual activist in 2016 in Baltimore, the U.S., and internationally.

Each of the panels and the papers presented allowed participants to explore topics such as, promises on teaching and education, memory, the resilience and construction of communities, language, diversity, and power. These topics made attendees think about the need to constantly analyze, critique and act upon structures that maintain and separate the daily experience of individuals and communities.

At the same time, the micro-talks session allowed the audience to engage in debates about the evolving LGBT+ language in digital spaces; the untapped radical potential of Disability Studies to confront inequities of oppression in the university; the presence and action of social movements on campuses, and the reflection on how teachers are intellectual/activists in their daily labor.

Finally, our successful Art as Protest session included powerful performances that reflected upon community, race, gender, and memory. Each performance executed a critique of power, and examined ways of resistance.

Assistant Professor of Women's Studies Specialization in LGBTQ Studies

We invite applications from persons whose scholarly production falls within the more traditional meaning of monographs and refereed journal articles and those whose scholarship is evidenced in performative and other creative venues or in a policy work. The successful candidate will be able to work across multiple disciplines and have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• Critical Race, Queer, or Transgender Theory/Studies/Policy

• Disability Studies/Crip Theory

• Transnational Genders and Sexualities, esp. Masculinities Across Racial Lines

• Gender and Sexuality in Performance Studies and Visual Culture

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or compatible terminal degree by the time of application.
