Alum News: Corine Toomer (Cohort 9) Corine Toomer, cohort 9, is overjoyed  to share with the LLC community the 3/20/15 arrival of her grand daughter, Avery Corine Harris. Her daughter, Davianne and son-in-law, Brandon live in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Toomer is the Sales Director for Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions in Oncology responsible to help the community practices operate more  efficiently so that they can be more focused on the unique needs of cancer patients.

We invite the Language, Literacy, and Culture community to attend the 37th annual Graduate Research Conference (GRC) on March 25th, 2015. As you know, the GRC is an opportunity for graduate students to share their research with the UMBC community. We are thrilled that nine LLCers are going to present their papers and works in progress during this all-day event. A special mention goes to doctoral candidate Romy Hübler, who serves as the GRC committee chair. Also, Inte’a DeShields contributed to the GRC while working at the GSA.

The LLC has just released the preliminary schedule of classes for this coming Fall (see attachment on the LLC Group's site). Keep in mind that these are the classes offered by our department's faculty members.

We are gathering class schedules from our affiliated departments and encourage you to check our website again in a couple of weeks for that additional information.

As a reminder, you cannot register for any classes without first obtaining permission from your LLC advisor, so you are encouraged to consult with your advisor in a timely fashion.

The Jodi Crandall Fellowship Award provides support for collaborative, interdisciplinary research by current LLC doctoral students who are working in teams that can include any of the following collaborators: other LLC students, LLC regular or affiliate faculty, and LLC graduates.

Applicants will submit a one-page proposal that will be considered by the Crandall Fund Advisory Board, selected by and including the LLC Director. The proposal should include a description of the project and its relevance to LLC, along with a short budget justification detailing how funds will be used.

Grant recipients will be expected to disseminate their work through avenues such as formal or informal talks on campus and in the community, a presence on the LLC website, publication (paper or online), and/or ongoing online updates.

Deadline: February 15, 2015

Announcement of Awards: Awards announced during the spring 2015 semester.

Award Amounts: There is no set amount for the award, and no set number of grants. We will award a total of $1,000 to cover the requests of all of the applications that are evaluated as being outstanding. Any undistributed funds will roll over to the next year, and applicants can reapply.

This award can be used to support items including but not limited to: fieldwork, archival materials, research travel, equipment purchase, etc. We want the award to support LLC research. Awardees will have one year to use all funds.

Requirements: Submit a one-page application listing all student/faculty members involved in the project, their affiliation with LLC, and, for applicants, your current status in the program and progress toward degree completion.

Send the completed application to Liz Steenrod at esteenrod@umbc.edu by February 15st.

On December 1, the U.S. Army website published an article about our dear colleague Ingrid Parker (Cohort 14). The article, Audacity, empathy keys to commander's leadership, talks about Ingrid's experience serving in the army, her path to become a leader, and the research she is currently conducting to earn her LLC PhD degree.

Dr. Kevin Maxwell '02, was a special guest on the Kojo Nnamdi show on Wednesday on WAMU (NPR).

Just east of D.C., Prince George's County public schools are on the front lines of the national debate over undocumented children from Central America. Hundreds of these new arrivals are enrolled in the Maryland district, which began classes last week. Schools CEO Kevin Maxwell -- in his second year at the helm of a district in transition -- joins Kojo to talk about immigration, education, and the range of academic and demographic challenges that keep him busy.
