We are seeking nominations for students to be considered for the 24th annual St. Jude Children's Research Hospital National Graduate Student Symposium (NGSS). The NGSS is an exceptional academic and professional development opportunity for Ph.D. students and will be held March 24-27, 2026, on the St. Jude campus.

The NGSS is an all-expenses-paid symposium to which top Ph.D. students from around the country are invited to participate. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with an estimated graduation between April 2026 and July 2027. Preference will be given to students whose work is relevant to ongoing research at St. Jude.


The NGSS is not advertised. Students may apply only if they are nominated by faculty. To nominate students, please visit stjude.org/ngss and complete a simple form. You may nominate multiple students, but nominations must be received by October 16th, 2025. We would appreciate it if you could forward this information to your Graduate Program Directors or other faculty members who may wish to nominate outstanding students.


Invitations to apply will be sent to students in late October. For those graduating before April 2026 who may be interested in postdoctoral fellowships at St. Jude, they may review stjude.org/postdoc and our open positions: https://talent.stjude.org/postdoc/jobs.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2025 solicitation 2 cycle. Applications are due on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. ET.

SCGSR application assistance workshops will be held on September 11, 2025, 2:00 p.m.–3:30 p.m. ET (register on Zoom for the first workshop) and October 9, 2025, 2:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m. ET (register on Zoom for the second workshop). The first workshop will provide a general overview of the program and application requirements. It will also include time for attendees to discuss their potential research topics and their alignment with the SCGSR priority areas with managers of each participating program office. At the second workshop, staff members will guide attendees through the application process, answer general questions, provide guidance on proposal writing, and lead discussions with scientists and former awardees. Additionally, the program manager will host virtual office hours every Friday 1:00–2:00 p.m. ET starting on September 26, 2025 via this Zoom link.

The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students for conducting part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE national laboratory scientist. The goal of the program is to prepare graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the mission of DOE’s Office of Science. The research opportunity will advance the graduate students’ overall graduate theses while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE national laboratories. In addition, SCGSR awardees may have the opportunity for short international research visits to select prestigious centers to broaden their horizons.

Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 1,300 graduate awardees from 170 U.S. universities to conduct thesis research at all 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation. Areas of research include but are not limited to: physics, chemistry, materials science, planetary science, geosciences, biosciences (non-medical), fusion science and engineering, mathematics, computer and computational sciences, engineering, microelectronics, quantum information science, and artificial intelligence.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, in collaboration with the Office of Science’s six research program offices and the DOE isotope R&D and production office, and DOE national laboratories/facilities. Program administration support is provided by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.

to do this’? Do you feel confident that you can survive, but aren’t sure how to succeed in your
program?
Please join us for a series of sessions designed to demystify the doctoral journey by making the
implicit expectations of graduate school explicit. Each session will provide you with the tools
and insights needed to decode a key aspect of academic life, helping you transition from
student to scholar with confidence. We want you to do your best work and be your best self.
Even if you feel like you’ve got this, come through and share your tips and tricks with your
fellow grad students. While the sessions are targeted towards first-year Ph.D. students, all
graduate students are welcome to participate.

The sessions will be on Thursdays from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM in ITE 229. RSVPs are appreciated
but not required.

Calling ALL current graduate students at UMBC interested in obtaining teaching experience to apply to be a SEA CIRTL Fellow for the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) and the CIRTL programs at UMBC. SEA provides one-week class for middle and high school students on UMBC Campus. These classes help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning new skills, and get excited about higher education at UMBC. This is a win-win opportunity, if you are considering pursuing a teaching career or gaining extra certifications before graduating UMBC, this could be a great fit for you.

These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop a SEA one (1) week course in a topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2026. 

Fellows will be required to attend professional development sessions hosted every 2 weeks, on Wednesday’s at 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM in person (ITE 238), starting October 1st, 2025 and ending in June 2026 that help them solidify their course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their courses. Fellows obtain an Associate CIRTL certificate for developing their course and attending the Professional Development sessions, and the Practitioner CIRTL certificate after teaching the class in summer. CIRTL is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2026, Fellows will be paid $1000/week if the course runs, for their time and effort. 

Note: Courses are run as half-day camps for a week (5 days), and Fellows will be able to choose two weeks of these five options: June 22-26, July 6-10, July 13-17, July 20-24, July 27 – 31.
