    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear Grad students and Postdocs at UMBC,</div><div><br></div><div>The <a href="https://bwtech.umbc.edu/programs/maryland-new-venture-fellows/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland New Venture Fellowship for Cybersecurity</a> is recruiting 6 (six) technologists (entrepreneurs with ideas on how to secure information systems, utilities, infrastructure, and supply chains) to start cohort 2 of this <span>$1.3M program. A technologist is the team member with the entrepreneurial idea to develop; this invitation is open to all graduate students and postdocs from all majors and research areas, including social sciences. If you are interested in the opportunity please click below in "Fellow" or "Technologist" to submit your application.</span><br><div><br></div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><br></div><div><strong>ABOUT THE PROGRAM</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong><a href="https://bwtech.umbc.edu/programs/maryland-new-venture-fellows/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland New Venture Fellowship for <span>Cybersecurity</span></a> is an experiential learning program designed to create and support the development of <span>cybersecurity</span> companies across Maryland. </div><div><br></div><div><span>Created in partnership with bwtech, UMBC, the University System of Maryland, and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, funds cybersecurity entrepreneurs working in collaboration toward cyber solutions and technologies that impact the public. Entrepreneurs in the program also benefit from graduate student assistance, Entrepreneur in Residence mentorship, and faculty members’ research from Maryland universities.</span><br><br>The program is run in teams. Based on interest areas, teams of 3 people are formed.  Each team will include a graduate student <strong><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1bCJLXg1vdxDJxWB21sK7lQXwiC4cGvyT-SQr-Bi4QaE/edit" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fellow</a></strong>, an entrepreneurial <strong>Mentor</strong>, and a <strong><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/10CeV7H-sJVI06XZTrmwEDHDvusHu8QeEnt011T3s81w/edit" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Technologist</a></strong> from Maryland universities. Each team will translate technologies developed to secure our information systems, utilities, infrastructure, and supply chains into viable companies.<br><br>Over eight months, the teams will participate in a program that will carve a path forward towards commercialization and ultimately start a company. The goal is to develop an early-stage team that can translate the technology into a viable, successful enterprise. Teams will meet regularly and participate in curated programming designed to drive commercialization and rapid progress. Below is a snippet of the content of the discussion: </span><div><div><br></div><div>"This session in the Diverse Classroom Series asks participants to reflect on the ways the "normal" college classroom in 2019 may have oppressed our diverse student body. She earned a Ph.D. in Zoology from Texas A&amp;M University in the laboratory of Dr. Mark J. Zoran. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas under the direction of Dr. Bing Zang (now Professor of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri). Dr. Martinez Acosta has studied systems-level neural plasticity in the annelid worm, Lumbriculus variegatus and in Drosophila melanogaster. Her lab continues to study molecular mechanisms governing neural regeneration and wound healing and the role of stem cell populations in these regenerative processes. She has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of the Army in support of the research she carries out primarily with undergraduates. <br><br>Dr. Martinez Acosta has won numerous awards for university teaching and service and has provided educational and professional development of faculty in diversity and inclusion at national meetings. In 2020, Dr. Martinez Acosta was named one of the 100 Inspiring Hispanic/Latinx scientists in America by Cell Mentor. She is the host of the award-winning radio show <a href="https://sreb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94710102263bfecbaa9dfe594&amp;id=a6264ded56&amp;e=afc77c202b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Today with Dr. Kaye</a> on <a href="https://sreb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94710102263bfecbaa9dfe594&amp;id=d37b44b832&amp;e=afc77c202b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">WEAA</a>, 88.9 FM and the 2021 recipient of a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.</p><p>Dr. Whitehead is the author of several books, including <em>RaceBrave: new and selected works</em>; <em>Notes from a Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Frances Davis</em>; and <em>Letters to My Black Sons: Raising Boys in a Post-Racial America</em>. She is a K-12 master teacher in African American history; an award-winning curriculum writer and lesson plan developer; and an award-winning former Baltimore City middle school teacher.</p><p>In 2021, Dr. Whitehead was selected by the Baltimore Business Journal to receive the <a href="https://sreb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=94710102263bfecbaa9dfe594&amp;id=cde9cf781f&amp;e=afc77c202b" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Leaders in Diversity Award</a>. Prior to her work in academia, Dr. Whitehead was a documentary filmmaker with MetroTV, a PBS-affiliate, and a senior producer for Music Television Networks (MTV). The </span><a href="https://www.inclusivestemteaching.org/" title="https://www.inclusivestemteaching.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Inclusive STEM Teaching Project</a><span>, a NSF grant-funded program, is launching a FREE Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from </span><strong>June 15th - July 27<sup>th</sup></strong><span>. </span></p><p></p><span><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The six-week MOOC is designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability of STEM faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff to cultivate inclusive learning environments for their students. Participants will engage in deep reflection and discussion around topics of equity and inclusion across a variety of institutional contexts. YOU CAN EARN CREDIT FOR <strong>FOUR CIRTL WORKSHOPS </strong>by participating!!           <div class="html-content"><span><p>On <strong>Thursday, 18 February 2021, from 9 to 10am,</strong> the <em>American Society of Engineering Management </em>(ASEM) and UMBC are hosting a fireside chat on Product Inclusion with Annie Jean-Baptiste, author of <strong>Building for Everyone: Expand Your Market with Design Practices from Google’s Product Inclusion Team</strong>. In her talk, she'll discuss how to build inclusive products across the intersections of 12 dimensions of diversity. She is passionate about making the web work for under-served communities while ensuring that Google is a place where everyone shines for their differences.
