The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Although there are only a few days during which help is needed in January, advisors in good standing may be invited back to participate in our much larger Summer program afterwards. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! See more info here: https://badges.umbc.edu/

Graduate Student Internship Opportunity

The John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Higher Education (Gardner Institute) is looking for an Intern for Spring 2026!

For the past 25 years, the Gardner Institute has worked with institutions to improve their student success. We are seeking an intern for the Spring 2026 term a Graduate Intern who is interested in working with the Gardner Institute's engagements with college and university partners.

Interns are given the opportunity to collaborate alongside the Gardner Institute staff on work related to student success. Each intern is expected to work 10-15 hours per week and complete a project by the end of their term. 

Qualifications:

Interested candidates should be pursuing degrees in higher education administration or a related field, and be interested in working with college and university administrators, faculty, staff and students in support of institutional transformation that advances student success.

The work will include the intern's participation in professional learning environments offered in the Gardner Institute academies. Depending on areas of interest, the intern will also have the chance to be involved in our partnerships with institutions redesigning their first-year or transfer experiences, academic advising, retention or curriculum.


Interns will receive a stipend of $1,500 per semester and academic credit may also be available.

The Hertz Fellowship provides financial and lifelong professional support for the nation’s most promising doctoral students in the applied sciences, engineering and mathematics. Awarded through a rigorous selection process honed over seven decades, Hertz Fellows receive up to five years of funding and join an influential community dedicated to solving our most pressing challenges.

SEA provides one-week class for middle and high school students on UMBC Campus. These classes help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning new skills, and get excited about higher education at UMBC. This is a win-win opportunity, if you are considering pursuing a teaching career or gaining extra certifications before graduating UMBC, this could be a great fit for you. 

These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop a SEA one (1) week course in a topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2026

This is the final call for ALL current graduate students at UMBC interested in obtaining teaching experience to apply to be a SEA CIRTL Fellow for the Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) and the CIRTL programs at UMBC. SEA provides one-week class for middle and high school students on UMBC Campus. These classes help kids to stay engaged, have fun learning new skills, and get excited about higher education at UMBC. This is a win-win opportunity, if you are considering pursuing a teaching career or gaining extra certifications before graduating UMBC, this could be a great fit for you. 

These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop a SEA one (1) week course in a topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 and implement the course with SEA in Summer 2026
