The Summer Dissertation House is coming to UMBC, July 8-11. Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the application procedures on the application webpage for the Dissertation House.

• The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 8 through Friday, July 11.
• Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days. 
• Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.
• Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.
• The July 8-11, 2014 Dissertation House is only available to UMBC’s graduate students.
• This version of the Dissertation House is open to all graduate students, in all disciplines.
• There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Commitment to the goals of the program, strong academic and research credentials and an interest in teaching and mentoring will be important criteria used in the selection process.

The application will include:

• Proposal of research (limit 1 page),
• Statement of plans to advocate for diversity in the professoriate including teaching and mentoring philosophy (limit 1 page),
• Selection of 3-5 potential mentors and a brief overview of interest in each lab (limit 1 page total)
• Letters of Reference (limit 2)
• Curriculum Vitae

Conference Financial Support for Students and Young Researchers

The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is pleased to announce a limited number of awards to assist young researchers who graduated no earlier than 2009 and students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in statistics, biostatistics, survey methodology or a related area in a U.S. university to attend the conference on Frontiers of Hierarchical Modeling in Observational Studies, Complex Surveys and Big Data.  The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is the nation’s oldest and largest program offering graduate training in the principles and practices of survey research.  Please visit  http://www.jpsm.umd.edu/ to learn more about JPSM.

This conference  will be held May 29-31, 2014, at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The conference is hosted by the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM).  The awards, funded by the National Science Foundation (upon final approval), Westat, and the Washington Statistical Society (WSS), will support about 14 travel awards to cover registration and travel expenses up to a maximum of $800 and, in addition, about 14 registration waivers.
