  <Title>The Summer Dissertation House at UMBC begins in July. Applications are being accepted now.</Title>

    <p><strong>Open application period: Early bird May 12, 2014 – May 23, 2014. Late registration May 24, 2014 </strong><strong>– May 31, 2014 (Applications received during the early bird period will have priority)<br></strong></p>
    <p><strong><em>(Please note that there are only 15 to 18 slots for this event, consider applying early) </em><br></strong></p>

    <li><span>The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 8 through Friday, July 11.</span></li>
    <li><span>Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days. </span></li>
    <li><span>Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.</span></li>
    <li><span>Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.</span></li>
    <li><span>The July 8-11, 2014 Dissertation House is only available to UMBC’s graduate students.</span></li>
    <li>This version of the Dissertation House is open to all graduate students, in all disciplines.</li>
    <li><span>There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House. </span></li>
    <li><span>Details regarding eligibility can be found on the application page of the website for the Dissertation House.</span></li>

  <Title>July 2014 Summer Horizons: Apply to Graduate School! Special Speaker: UMBC&#8217;s President, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski</Title>

    <p><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the annual <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 2.5-hour workshop will feature sessions on the application timeline, GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  There will be a panel hosted by current graduate students, and the keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A.     <p><strong>The 2014 Summer Horizons program is open to <span><em>anyone</em></span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material that we will present  is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>
    <p>Invitations are  extended to:</p>

    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend</li>
    <li> Students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>Students from any college or university, who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</li>

  <Title>July 2014 Summer Horizons: Apply to Graduate School! Special Speaker: UMBC&#8217;s President, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski</Title>

    <p><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC</a> will host the annual <a href="http://summerhorizons.wordpress.com/history-of-the-horizons-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Horizons program</a> for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 2.5-hour workshop will feature sessions on the application timeline, GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school.  There will be a panel hosted by current graduate students, and the keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2111975_2111976_2112119,00.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Freeman A.     <p><strong>The 2014 Summer Horizons program is open to <span><em>anyone</em></span> who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process.</strong>  The graduate school preparation material that we will present  is applicable to most U.S. institutions.  Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event.  Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend.</p>
    <p>Invitations are  extended to:</p>

    <li>All UMBC undergraduate students</li>
    <li>As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students  from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend</li>
    <li> Students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region</li>
    <li>Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school</li>
    <li>McNair programs at any school.</li>
    <li>Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.</li>
    <li>Students from any college or university, who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.</li>

    <div class="html-content"><p>PROMISE AGEP: Maryland Transformation (An NSF AGEP-T), is proud to announce the opening round of applications for the new University System of Maryland’s STEM Postdoctoral Fellowship program.</p>
    <p><strong>This NSF funded program is designed to promote faculty diversity by preparing diverse, talented postdoctoral trainees with the career skills needed to succeed in STEM academic research.</strong>  Fellows will propose research projects at a home institution of: University of Maryland, University of Maryland-Baltimore, or University of Maryland-Baltimore County, the three research institutions within the twelve-campus University System of Maryland.   Additionally, fellows will design opportunities for research, teaching and mentoring rotations at one or two other System institutions. In addition to an innovative research experience, fellows will receive career development guidance, participate in a community of scholarship, create new collaborations and cultivate employment opportunities. Fellows will receive a stipend plus benefits.    The fellowship period is one year.  Awards will be made to 1-2 scholars per year.</p>

    <p>The application deadline for positions beginning in the fall of 2014 is June 15. <em><strong>Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a PhD in a STEM field.</strong></em> Commitment to the goals of the program, strong academic and research credentials and an interest in teaching and mentoring will be important criteria used in the selection process.</p>

    <li>Proposal of research (limit 1 page),</li>
    <li>Statement of plans to advocate for diversity in the professoriate including teaching and mentoring philosophy (limit 1 page),</li>

    <Title>Graduate Students' voice in the financial conversation</Title>

We're asking all graduate students, including those who are working full-time, to participate in this conversation by completing a survey. </p><p><br></p><p>We launched the survey in April, but CGS is allowing us to offer a <strong>BONUS ROUND</strong> for the "Survey of Financial Standing" for those graduate students who did not complete the survey last month. We have winners for the initial round: $500 in prizes!     <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><p>Career Services is currently accepting applications for Career Peer Advisors. <br></p><p>Career Peer Advisors assist the Career Services Center in extending career services and information to the UMBC student body. Students must be able to commit at least one academic year to the following duties and responsibilities: take walk-in appointments, review resumes and cover letters; facilitate workshops/seminars; help market CSC services and programs to UMBC student body; design and present group information meetings upon request to student organizations, residence halls, and other groups; provide general office reception duties; conduct outreach to student organizations and one of three colleges (Engineering and Information Technology, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural and Mathematical Sciences); work closely with  CSC staff on special projects as needed.  Training will be provided. Hours:  10-12 per week.</p><p><strong>Note: All majors encouraged to apply.</strong></p><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p>Continuing undergraduate or graduate student with at least a 2.75 GPA; strong interest in helping others and working with students, staff, employers, and faculty; in good academic standing; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience with public speaking helpful; ability to use tact and diplomacy in working with others both face to face and on the phone; previous or current involvement in campus organizations or activities helpful; computer literacy and comfort with PowerPoint presentation technology; detail oriented, dependable and reliable; initiative and enthusiasm.     <p>Diversity in Life Science Programs (DLSP) at Keystone Symposia has just been advised that it will receive additional funds to support assistant professors and scientists from industry at an equivalent level who wish to attend Keystone Symposia meetings. The particular meetings available to attend are listed below. These are the only meetings available for this particular funding. The award is a reimbursement award, and will cover registration fees, lodging, airfare and ground transit.</p>

    <p>The time frame is very tight and I ask for your help in sharing this information with any assistant professor or scientist from industry at equivalent level in life and biomedical sciences. You can forward this message or advise individuals to contact me directly. Please share on your networks right away. The eligibility criteria are as follows:</p>

    <p>The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is pleased to announce a limited number of awards to assist young researchers who graduated no earlier than 2009 and students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in statistics, biostatistics, survey methodology or a related area in a U.S. university to attend the conference on <em>Frontiers of Hierarchical Modeling in Observational Studies, Complex Surveys and Big Data</em>.  The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is the nation’s oldest and largest program offering graduate training in the principles and practices of survey research.  Please visit  <a href="http://www.jpsm.umd.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.jpsm.umd.edu/</a> to learn more about JPSM.</p>

    <p>This conference  will be held <span>May 29-31, 2014</span>, at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The conference is hosted by the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM).  The awards, funded by the National Science Foundation (upon final approval), Westat, and the Washington Statistical Society (WSS), will support about 14 travel awards to cover registration and travel expenses up to a maximum of $800 and, in addition, about 14 registration waivers.
