We have taken best practices from our NSF PROMISE AGEP Dissertation House and the NSF ADVANCE Hispanic Women in STEM Project to develop the “Writing for Publication” workshop. This week, we welcome 22 members of the faculty from Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) to our workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Kevin Omland of UMBC will be the key presenter.
Anyone who is working on an article for publication, may join us on this blog over the next few days. Feel free to add a comment and tell us what you’re writing.

PROMISE students celebrate new UMES President, Dr. Juliette Bell, on UMES’ campus
Our PROMISE AGEP is in the “PROMISE Pathways” phase where we have been looking at ways to expand our program and partner with more campuses within the University System of Maryland (USM). On Tuesday, April 16, 2013, a group of PROMISE students left UMBC at 5AM to travel to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to serve as moderators for the 2013 Regional Research Symposium which was part of the celebration activities for the new president, Dr. Juliette Bell. Dr. Bell, a biochemist, spent time meeting and greeting the group from UMBC. Dr. Bell’s own mentor from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/National Institutes of Health (NIEHS/NIH), Dr. Thomas Kunkel, gave a keynote address that discussed innovations in DNA repair.

Students also had a chance to talk with Dr. T. Sean Vasaitis, an assistant professor at UMES, and former PROMISE Peer Mentor from UMB. We extend thanks to Dr. Jennifer Keane-Dawes, Dean of the Graduate School at UMES for her invitation and hospitality, and we thank Dr. Lakeisha L. Harris, for her logistics leadership. Congratulations to all of the poster and oral presentation winners, and to the faculty who won special awards.

The Summer Dissertation House is coming to UMBC, July 9-12. Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the application procedures on the application webpage for the Dissertation House.
Open application period: Early bird May 13, 2013 – May 24, 2013. Late registration May 25, 2013 – May 31, 2013 (Applications received during the early bird period will have priority)
(Please note that there are only 15 to 18 slots for this event, consider applying early)
Applications
received after May 31, 2013 will be considered for the DH waiting
list. More information about the Dissertation House: http://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/about/
- The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 9 through Friday, July 12.
- Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days.
- Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.
- Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.
- The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.
- There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Dr. Portia Taylor, an alum of the PROMISE Dissertation House at Carnegie Mellon (hosted by the Quality of Life Technology Center – University of Pittsburgh/Carnegie Mellon University), will be a guest speaker for UMBC’s Information Systems Department on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, 12-1:00 PM, in Room 459 of the Information Technology/Engineering (ITE) Building. The UMBC announcement can be found here: http://www.csee.umbc.edu/2013/04/talk-sensor-based-assessment-of-human-motion-during-therapeutic-exercise/
All are invited to attend Dr. Taylor’s lecture. Dr. Taylor is an IT Fellow at the Social Security Administration, and is a new Adjunct Assistant Professor in Information Systems at UMBC.

We have taken best practices from our NSF PROMISE AGEP Dissertation House and the NSF ADVANCE Hispanic Women in STEM Project to develop the “Writing for Publication” workshop. This week, we welcome 22 members of the faculty from Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) to our workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Kevin Omland of UMBC will be the key presenter.
