Tutor-Mentor Position Description
Overview - UMBC’s Sherman Scholars Program, in collaboration with The Shriver Center, is formalizing the Reach Together Program (RTP) to engage UMBC students in mentoring and tutoring Baltimore City youth. The program draws on one of UMBC’s core themes -- “reach together” -- to capture the collaborative approach to academic improvement with students and families and the focus on pushing boundaries and making big breakthroughs in students’ learning trajectories. UMBC students will provide remote mentoring and tutoring services to support Baltimore City youth through biweekly, small-group tutoring to promote engagement, learner identity, and academic growth. This model of the program is designed to support mathematics learning.
Mentor-tutors will each provide targeted math tutoring for five students through a 9-week program (September 21 – November 20) with a week of training the week of September 14. Tutor-mentors will collaborate in a tutoring cluster comprised of one school-based coordinating teacher, four tutors, and twenty students. Participating students may include students from grades 3-10, contingent upon the finalized school partnerships. The anticipated weekly commitment is six hours, inclusive of two hours of tutoring, a one-hour program meeting, a one-hour cluster meeting, and two hours of planning and family outreach. Upon full completion of the program, mentor-tutors will receive a $1200 stipend.
Key Responsibilities & Expectations
Serve as a mentor-tutor for approximately 5 students
Design and implement tutor sessions to promote group culture and relationships
Provide individualized support and mentorship for students
Establish and maintain contact with family members to foster connection
Draft session plans for two sessions per week
Attend weekly program-wide meetings
Coordinate with other team members, including mentor-tutors and coordinating teacher
Incorporate feedback from the coordinating teacher
Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications
Experience volunteering or working in K-12 schools OR experience tutoring students at the K-12 level
Willingness to receive feedback and adjust practice
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with students, colleagues, and families
Knowledge of K-12 math content and a desire to grow this knowledge
Interest in teaching and working with youth
Hours and Compensation
Tutor-mentors are required to participate in the two scheduled tutor sessions per week, as well as the program meeting and team meeting. The estimated weekly commitment is 6-hours, broken down as follows:
Tutor Sessions - 2 hours per week (scheduled)
Program Meeting - 1 hour per week (scheduled)
Team Meeting - 1 hour per week (scheduled)
Planning and Preparation - 1 hour per week (flexible)
Family Outreach - 1 hour per week (flexible)
Tutor-mentors will receive a $1080 stipend at the end of the program and may be pro-rated if key responsibilities are not fulfilled.
