Friendly Reminder: Final Fall 2019 grades will be updated on Academic Official Transcripts for all UMBC students on January 9, 2020.
In early January, the Merit Scholarship Unit will conduct their mid year academic review for all current UMBC merit scholars to ensure they are maintaining their scholarship requirements. Scholar recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (which may vary depending upon their awarded scholarship) as well as maintain full-time enrollment (part-time for transfer scholars) each fall and spring semester.
Recipients failing to meet these requirements will lose their scholarship and be notified via e-mail, myUMBC Alert & by USPS mail of their award discontinuation.
First Semester Freshman
Freshmen scholars beginning Fall 2019 who fail to meet the 3.25 cumulative GPA and/or full-time enrollment requirement, will automatically be placed on Scholarship Warning. No Scholarship Discontinuation Appeal is required. Scholarship Warning automatically places a student on a warning period, while granting them continuous receipt of their scholarship for the spring semester (for first-semester (fall) freshmen only.) This allows them one additional semester to improve their academics by utilizing resources on campus and strengthening study and time management skills.
Incomplete or Incorrect Grades:
If you had incomplete or incorrect grades that have since been updated on your Academic Transcript, please report this concern using our online Scholarship Contact Form so our committee may re-review. Please do not submit a Discontinuation Appeal Request.
Fall 2019 "Scholarship Probation" scholars:
Scholars currently on Fall 2019 Scholarship Probation will be evaluated to determine if the student has met the terms of their award and can be placed back in "Good Standing." Scholars failing to continue meeting their terms will be discontinued and will need to re-appeal for a probation extension.
Upper Classmen
Once a scholar has been discontinued from their merit scholarship, their award will not be reinstated regardless if the student is able to meet the terms of their scholarship in a future semester. Students, however, will have approximately 2 weeks following official notification to appeal the status of their discontinuation. If approved, scholars will be placed on Scholarship Probation and remain under review for one (1) academic semester.
The application for Fall 2019 discontinuation appeals goes live January 6, 2020
The deadline for all Scholarship Discontinuation Appeals is 4:00PM on Friday, January 24, 2020 (for Fall 2019 discontinuations only). There will be no extensions to appeal after the deadline.
Previous semester discontinuation appeals will not be accepted.
