The American Educational Research Association has awarded Claudia Galindo (Language, Literacy and Culture) a grant to examine the cognitive and social-emotional growth of Latino kindergarteners in relation to policy-relevant classroom factors such as class composition and language mix, teaching practices, and teachers’ beliefs regarding the importance of social-emotional skills versus cognitive skills. Results of this research, titled "Narrowing Early Disparities: How Does Kindergarten Advance Latino Children’s Cognitive Outcomes and Social Skills" are expected to help identify policies and interventions to narrow the achievement gap between Latinos and other children.
