Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences should contact
Rachel Brubaker, CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. Consult with your department chair or program director before beginning any funding application. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission. Plan additional time (5-7 business days) for routing.
CARAT (Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team) assists CAHSS faculty with research development and pre- and post-award services. CARAT offers a range of support activities for faculty seeking extramural funding, including drop-in sessions, individual consultations, workshops, and co-sponsored sessions. Check our

To request a consultation or to begin a proposal, visit our
pre-award assistance webpage (you must be logged-in to myUMBC to complete CARAT request forms). The lead time for fellowship proposal development is 2-3 business weeks, and at minimum 4 business weeks for grant proposal development. CARAT reserves the right to decline proposal requests that do not include adequate lead time.
PI Eligibility: UMBC uses Kuali, a cloud-based research administration tool, for proposals and awards. UMBC faculty identified as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on any proposal or award must first
obtain PI eligibility in order to develop proposals and receive awards at UMBC. This includes faculty with appointments after August 1, 2012, as well as faculty who have not previously applied for external funding. The process involves completing the Principal Investigator Research Administration Training and Education (PIRATE) in Blackboard and a PI Eligibility request form via DocuSign. PI applicants must also obtain PeopleSoft Finance and PAW Access.

UMBC's Entrepreneurial Learning Lab - Submit Your Application by December 17th!
Don't miss this exciting opportunity!
We're excited to invite applications for the Spring 2026 Cohort of the Entrepreneurial Learning Lab (ELL)—a hands-on program where students build entrepreneurial skills, earn internship credit, and work with UMBC faculty to assess the commercial or social-impact potential of their research.
ELL is a semester-long, cohort-based experience that teaches core innovation and entrepreneurship fundamentals, then puts them into practice through faculty research evaluations. It's a great fit for students interested in product development, consulting, research, design, entrepreneurship, or innovation in any field.
Students who complete the program earn internship credit and a $250 stipend, with an additional paid summer opportunity (up to $1,000) to continue project work.
Offered in partnership with the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (ABCEI) and the Engineering and Computing Education Program (ECEP), ELL helps students build real-world skills valued by employers and graduate programs.
-Students participate in interactive workshops covering eight key entrepreneurial competencies: opportunity recognition, customer discovery, market analysis, problem/solution fit, product/market fit, demand validation, value delivery, and pitching/storytelling.
By the end of the program, students will:
-Work in teams to evaluate UMBC research for commercialization or community impact
-Create and deliver a professional pitch deck
-Build résumé-ready project experience
-Strengthen communication, problem-solving, and innovation skills
-Open to undergraduate and graduate students from all majors
-Commitment to all workshops and project work
-No prior entrepreneurship experience required
-This is an in-person program; full attendance is required for credit
-Application Deadline: Tuesday, December 17, 2025 at 11:59 PM
-Applicants will be notified in early January

On Thursday, November 20th, the Alex. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (ABCEI) hosted the annual Idea & Innovation Challenge, which celebrates creativity, problem-solving, and student innovation. UMBC’s top student entrepreneurs took the stage in the University Center Ballroom to pitch their groundbreaking ideas to a panel of expert judges — and even the audience had a say, voting live for Best Presentation!
