2013 Idea Competition Winners!

<Tagline>Kyran Richardson Percy Addo win it with InSource #GotIdeas</Tagline>

The Sports Zone was yet again packed for UMBC's fall Idea Competition held on November 11th. Over 40 ideas were submitted and the Top Ten were selected for the final competition. Due to a last minute withdrawal, only 9 ideas were pitched to a standing room only crowd and a panel of three judges. Contestants were given a strict 3 minutes to present their ideas; those who went over heard the piercing sound of an air horn.

The big winners of the night were Kyran Richardson and Percy Addo. Their idea, Insource, creates a web based space that will provide students with an efficient way of recruiting individuals with desirable skill sets at UMBC. Through the utilization of collaborative tools like video conferencing and document sharing, Insource will provide users with the resources they need to connect, collaborate, and make projects and ideas come to life. “Insource makes collaboration between students a click and a step away,” said Richardson. Addo said that he and Richardson were “ecstatic and honored to have been chosen as the top idea.” Their award earned them $750.

The ideas this year varied drastically. Many implemented the skills of the universities engineering students, while others worked to make UMBC an even better experience.

Markus Proctor kicked off the night with his idea, BrainCAD: Computer Aided Design Software that is powered mainly by your thoughts and brain waves. Sounds crazy, I know, but there is hard science behind it and a working demo http://www.globatum.com/braincad. Other engineering ideas included The SJ Helmet, an idea presented by Abdulhadi Al Ruwaithi. The motorcycle style helmet has airbags inside that, in the course of an accident, will inflate and help protect the wearer. Cody Kenlak had a solution for finding the right music for every occasion, he calls it Dynamic Beatz.

Ideas to make UMBC a better and safer place are always crowd favorites, Emily Schultheis pitched her idea to bring 3D printing to every student at UMBC and a method for the university to generate funds to pay for it. Mohammed Akbar suggested that we “bring carpooling to UMBC” with his idea, Instaride. Jennifer Lasbury spoke to the crowd about SPEAKedu, which focused on the benefits and need for student education about sexual harassment. It was good enough to win her $250 and a third place title.

Also working to make UMBC more progressive and innovative is Perry Ogwuche. He realizes that UMBC is a place of untapped potential so he decided to bring *hack to UMBC*. He got LOTS of questions from the judges and attendees! In the end, Ogwuche won most creative pitch and a cash award of $250. Best of all, HackUMBC http://www.hackumbc.org/ launches this coming weekend, December 6-7, 2013. “It is a great feeling to get awarded for best presentation. I was not expecting it and it came as quite the surprise,” said Ogwuche after the competition was complete.

The second place winner, Titus Jones, won $500 for his idea called ChatSeats http://www.chatseats.org. The goal of Chatseats is to connect people - it's a way to have a great conversation with a total stranger. Jones said, “It's a way to casually meet awesome new people right in the midst of our busy lives.” ChatSeats is currently being piloted at TrueGrits. Check it out - sit down, start a conversation, and make new friends!

With the upcoming launch of the new entrepreneurial active learning workspace on campus, Entrespace, we expect to see many of this year's contestants working to make their ideas become a reality.

A special thanks to alums Chris Brandenburg (former CTO of Millennial Media), Corey Fleischer (winner of The Big Brain Theory), and Zuly Gonzalez (Co-founder & COO of Light Point Security), who were our judges for this year's Idea Competition. And to all the students who came out to listen and help select the winners!

5 Tips for pitching your idea to investors

<Tagline>For those pitching at tonight's Idea Comp #GotIdeas</Tagline>

You can share your thoughts throughout the event by tweeting with the hashtag #GotIdeas.

I remember last semester about this time of the day. We had been practicing for weeks to get our pitch down. We all knew the slides behind us so that we didn't even have to look.

For us, this article gave us some last minute insights and helped us to win the competition in Spring 2013.

Best of luck to all those pitching tonight. I can't wait to see what you all have in store for us.

5 tips for pitching your start-up to investors
January 2, 2013 12:00 PM
Yaron Tal
http://venturebeat.com/

I remember the first time my partner and I presented our startup to an angel investor. Many questions asked by the investor were left unanswered.

The intuitive question, “What are each you in charge of?” was answered by, “Both of us do whatever needs to be done for the startup’s success.” Does that sound like a good answer? No! He was hoping to hear that there was a clear role for each position and that each of us was in charge of a specific aspect of thebusiness without losing focus and missing something important between us.

Almost every day, I participate in a review of startups looking for investment. This experience has given me additional perspectives on what works, what catches an investor’s heart, and what is just badly put and creates antagonism.

It’s tough to criticize someone else’s vision and dream, but as I learned for myself, it’s highly important to do so and gives the entrepreneur a real chance to put their vision to the test and get feedback.

So what are the basic guidelines we should remember during a startup pitch? I’ll try to summarize them as five bullets (disclaimer: there is an endless number of bullets, but I wanted to emphasize these particular ones):

Homework

Most of the time, investors will have very little if any knowledge about what you are working on or vice versa — they’ll be expert on that particular space. If you can demonstrate your mastery of the numbers, your competitors, your budget, and everything else, it will provide a great indication to the investor that you know what you are talking about; and it will raise the investor’s confidence that you are the right team to go and execute that startup.

Story

It doesn’t matter that you think your idea is the next big thing. If your pitch is dull, unattractive, with only dry details, you’ll fail to catch the investor’s attention. He’ll lose focus. Before you know it, another one’s lost.

Build a story around your startup, a story that people can relate to. Learn about the person in front of you before the meeting and customize your pitch accordingly. Use a pitch guru to help you build your story; I recommend a good colleague, Donna Abraham, the best corporate storyteller I know.

Interaction

Fundraising is all about the people, and finding an investor is just like dating. If the interaction is bad, the result will be a rejection.

Keep eye contact, talk nicely, and most importantly, be kind. Don’t be arrogant; don’t act like a know-it-all; listen carefully; and try to answer in the most precise way you can. At the beginning of the meeting, don’t be afraid of breaking the ice. The people sitting next to you may be your next investors, so try to have a pleasant conversation and show your friendly side.

Comfort

Be comfortable. Wear the clothes you usually wear. I am always amazed by the people who come overdressed and you can see by the look on their face that they are not in their comfort zone. Create an environment that will make you feel as comfortable as you can.

Have fun

It’s as simple as that. It’s really important that you have fun during your pitch and throughout your startup journey in general. I know you work 24/7 and are busting your ass building your startup, but hey, if you’re not having fun, you’re in the wrong place.

The bottom line: The enthusiasm and obsession of entrepreneurs for their startups is magnetizing and very important, but the way you pitch and present your startup and ideas are crucial to succeeding in front of a potential investor, co-founder, employee, and every other person you want to bring on board.

Yaron Tal has been working on turning ideas into marketable products for more 12 years. Currently, Tal is CTO of security company 6scan and blogs at Startup Internals, where this post originally appeared.
