Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

The Museum of the Bible has granted me the responsibility of the development of educational programing for K-12 visitors. My duties include scholarly research, the design of activities, the writing of budgets, the obtainment of materials, the creation of prototypes, and the interaction with visitors on the floor of the museum. 

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of this position in early October of 2020 and subsequently submitted my application on October 12th. 

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? 

Amongst my peers, I often find myself alone in my interest in religious art. It is a great joy to work amongst colleagues who share my profound interest in biblical history and theology. 

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The education carts which I am in the process of developing will serve as the face of the museum. Engaging the museum guests by means of this programming will allow families, particularly students, to better immerse themselves with the knowledge our museum holds

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? 

Due to the fierce competition often involved in obtaining an internship or similar experience, it is vital to devote oneself to research and to learn to write excellent, creative cover letters.

Join us April 12, 2021 for a lecture and panel discussion with George Ciscle on curating in the community. Ciscle is the founder and director of The Contemporary, an “un-museum” in Baltimore and an educator and trailblazer in community-based arts and public programming. His work challenges existing conventions for exhibiting art, how we engage public spaces, and how we define curation.

In addition to discussing his work in both the Baltimore and the larger art community, Ciscle will be joined in conversation with Sandra Abbott, curator of collections and outreach at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, and Ashley Minner, professor of the practice and folklorist, Department of American Studies and director of the American Studies minor in Public Humanities. Their discussion will address community curation beyond unilateral engagement strategies and routine public programming.

Duration of Internship: June–August 2021

The Publications Marketing Intern will support the Maryland Center for History and Culture’s book publishing efforts within the Publications Department. The intern will gain experience working in a collaborative, nonprofit setting and assisting with specific activities related to book marketing and sales at MCHC— the oldest continuously operating cultural institution in Maryland. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this internship is currently a virtual opportunity.

The Program Assistant for Grants and Community Engagement reports to the Director of Grants & Community Engagement and works in collaboration with the Grants Committee to provide program and general administrative support. The position assists the Director in developing and sustaining relationships with organizations around the state via the Regional Humanities Networks. The Program Assistant works as a thought partner in shaping the Grants program and Regional Humanities Networks with the Program Officer for Grants and Community Engagement.
