How does a scientist who only wanted to do research and develop mathematical models end up being a serial entrepreneur? It was an interesting journey, but that's exactly what happened to Dr. Kimberly Brown, CEO, Amethyst Technologies, LLC.

Kimberly started Amethyst Technologies 12 years ago.  Amethyst's work includes supporting improved diagnostics and health outcomes for 50,000 HIV/AIDS patients in Kenya, quality improvement for 2,000 facilities in Tanzania that support HIV/AIDS patients, implementing the training program to support FDA compliance for 1,000 scientists at the US Army Medical Research Laboratory, training healthcare workers during the Ebola outbreak in Liberia, and performing assessments of hospitals in Iraq for compliance to international standards.

Amethyst started with one employee and one client in 2007 and now supports five US government agencies, two African governments, and numerous private sector manufacturing and biotechnology companies.

On February 7 2019,   Dr. Antonia Ligouri spoke at UMBC at an event sponsored by the Dresher Center.  Dr. Ligouri is a Lecturer in Applied Storytelling School of the Arts, English and Drama at Loughborough University, UK and Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Fellow at the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access. Antonia works extensively with digital storytelling in community contexts world-wide.   




From Personal to Collective: Using Digital Storytelling to Unlock Grassroots Knowledge Psychologist Jerome Bruner said that narrative is a “principle by which people organize their experience in, knowledge about, and transactions with the social world.” Stories make information more understandable, memorable, and persuasive, unlocking grassroots knowledge and using the power of emotions to shape decisions. Digital storytelling has also emerged as an effective action research method to engage communities in collective participation and action, grounded in their sense of place and their distinctive cultural knowledge. Attention all aspiring entrepreneurs! Do you have an idea for a company? Are you ready to try out something new, take risks, and be your own boss? If you answered yes, then the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) is the perfect opportunity to do so! CBIC is a competition exclusively for UMBC students that gives out up to $5,000 in cash prizes!

Announcing the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) – Prizes up to $5K!!!

What is the CBIC?

The Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) is a unique opportunity for UMBC graduate and undergraduate students who are serious about starting a business.  Participants will experience the process of planning a startup business by submitting a competitive and realistic 3-5 page business plan, which will be judged by members of the Baltimore Angels (real investors!).  Qualifiers will present their ideas in a final competition, where cash prizes will be given out.

Prizes:

First Prize= $3,000
Second Prize = $2,000
Third Prize = $1,000
 
After a 6-month review, an additional $2,000 is available to one of the top 3 winners.
 
Who Should Participate?

Any UMBC student (full or part time, graduate or undergraduate) with a dream of launching their own business.

Why Participate?

The CBIC will give you “real world” experience presenting and proposing your own idea.  You’ll be paired with a business mentor and get helpful feedback and guidance. You’ll also get connected to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, which allows for networking and further business opportunities. On top of that, there’s some hefty cash prizes!
