Important Note About CBIC Applications
Confirmation Email Issues!
We recently have been notified that certain applicants did not receive a confirmation email upon submitting their application for the CBIC. If you have not received a confirmation email or are unsure that we received your application, please email armor@umbc.edu IMMEDIATELY.
For those of you who have not yet submitted your application, the deadline for submittals is THIS THURSDAY at 1:00 PM.
If you have an idea for a company and are ready to try out something new, take risks, and be your own boss, then the Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) is the perfect opportunity to do so! CBIC is a competition exclusively for UMBC students that gives out up to $5,000 in cash prizes!
What is the CBIC?
The Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC) is a unique opportunity for UMBC graduate and undergraduate students who are serious about starting a business. Participants will experience the process of planning a startup business by submitting a competitive and realistic 3-5 page business plan, which will be judged by members of the Baltimore Angels (real investors!). Qualifiers will present their ideas in a final competition, where cash prizes will be given out.
Prizes:
First Prize= $3,000
Second Prize = $2,000
Third Prize = $1,000
After a 6-month review, an additional $2,000 is available to one of the top 3 winners.
Who Should Participate?
Any UMBC student (full or part time, graduate or undergraduate) with a dream of launching their own business.
Why Participate?
The CBIC will give you “real world” experience presenting and proposing your own idea. You’ll be paired with a business mentor and get helpful feedback and guidance. You’ll also get connected to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, which allows for networking and further business opportunities. On top of that, there’s some hefty cash prizes!

Schedule: Part-time position, 25 hours a week, Monday-Tuesday 2:45p-7:45pm, Wednesday-Thursday 2:45-5:45pm, remaining hours flexible to accommodate attending community meetings, events and promotional opportunities. Position is $19,500 annually and expected to start with anticipated hire date in early April 2019.
Purpose: To coordinate outreach for all Jubilee Arts programs and run daily operations of Jubilee Arts classes.

From Engineer to Entrepreneur
TOMORROW -- 12 - 1 PM -- UC Ballroom Lounge
Tomorrow, come listen to alumnus Corey Fleischer talk about how his personal interests played a large role in his path to studying mechanical engineering and his dedication to SAE Baja at UMBC. This led to his undergrad research, a career at Lockheed Martin, and a launch into entrepreneurship as he went from building projects to building companies.
To date, Corey has been involved in three start-up companies: The Foundery, which was a large success, a product development company which was a mild success, and a tech company that was a devastating failure. At The Foundery Corey encouraged people to prototype quickly so they could "fail fast, fail forward". A product's first design rarely shows significant success regardless of its hardware or software.
Entrepreneurs need to learn as much as they can from failed iterations and plan for flexibility so when mistakes are made they won't be catastrophic. Corey will also candidly talk about his failed start-up and how it taught him the most important real life lessons and how to weigh risks.
