    <p><span>The Department of English kicks off the 2018–19 Literary Reading Series with <span>The B</span><span>lack Ladies Brunch Collective (BLBC)</span>, a group of Maryland-based poets whose mission is to promote and inspire the voices of Black women.</span></p>
    <p><span>The mission of the Black Ladies Brunch Collective<span>,</span> founded in 2014 in Washington, D.C., is to promote and inspire the voices of Black women — who have been, as a population, historically marginalized and silenced. BLBC recognizes the artistic work of Black women, and encourages and fosters collaboration between them. BLBC serves the whole artistic community but specifically aims to inspire under-privileged/under-represented/women of color. BLBC wishes to serve as a model for other black women writers who desire to create social and professional communities that not only support their creative development but also enrich and maintain their spirits.</span></p>

This play will be presented October 19th and 20th at the Chesapeake Arts Center.  James is a young Vietnam veteran recently returned home from the war and having trouble re-integrating into society.  This dramatic and exciting play takes place in 1968 during a very tumultuous time in American History.     <div>GiveBackHack is a weekend-long hackathon that brings together passionate community members to develop sustainable, technology-based solutions to some of our most pressing social issues. It is coming to Baltimore for the first time this fall, from <strong>Friday, October 26th to Sunday,</strong>

    <strong>October 28th</strong>, at <strong>Allovue</strong> (301 W. 29th St. Baltimore, MD 21211).</div>

    <div>At the event, you’ll have a chance to:</div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Share your idea and/or listen to other participants’ ideas of how to help solve the community’s problems.</li>
    <li>Team up around an idea that you believe in and work on it over the weekend. Build an MVP with the support of some incredible mentors.</li>
    <li>Present the idea with your team to a panel of judges. The top teams are provided with resources to move forward and sustain their ideas.</li>

See for yourself at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture exhibition of</span><span> <a href="http://events.umbc.edu/go/63000" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">A Designed Life: Contemporary American Textile, Wallpapers, and Containers &amp; Packaging</a>, </span><span>This exhibition focuses on the use of modern design textiles and consumer goods of the mid-20th century and how they were used by the U.S Department of State in the 1950s to promote American culture in post WWII Europe. See how something so small as a square of wallpaper or fabric was used to communicate with people across the globe about life in America.</span></p>
