Idea Competition Applications are now OPEN

Annual Idea Competition deadline is Oct 11--Win up to $750!!


Do YOU have the next great idea? Itching to create a positive impact on society? Share your ideas with us and you might just be able to do that and win up to $750! We want to help bring your ideas to life, and here’s how you can make this a reality!

The UMBC Idea Competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities all around us. As one of the most innovative schools in the nation, UMBC harbors many innovative students that have ideas that can change the world, and we believe students like you are capable of making this happen.

Simply answer a few questions and submit your idea via the entry form to share your idea with us. The top entries will be judged by a panel of professionals and alumni, along with a crowd of students on November 15, 2018, at the final competition in the Sports Zone in the Commons. Video entries via YouTube are allowed as well, but are limited to 60 seconds.

Cash prizes are:

  • 1st prize                  $750

  • 2nd Prize                $500

  • 3rd Prize                 $250

  • Best Pitch               $250


How to Enter

To enter the competition, complete the UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form where you will describe your idea along with a description of the problem or opportunity you wish to apply it to. Submission forms will be limited to one page, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea briefly yet effectively. Video entries submitted via YouTube are also allowed in which you can personally pitch your idea. Although they are not required, they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.

Interested in the artistic research, cultural work and programs that are going on this semester? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” (or even “maybe”) then come to the free CIRCA Professional Development Intensive! This session is TODAY,  September 7th from 1-3:30 and will include faculty, staff and guest speakers informally presenting a variety of works that are happening on campus and in the Baltimore area.


Location:  Room 102, Performing Arts and Humanities Building


You can stay for one presentation, a few, or all! This is a perfect opportunity for students to network and to share thoughts and creative ideas.

The Baltimore Philharmonia Orchestra is currently accepting applications for multiple positions as section violinists. This is a volunteer position. The orchestra rehearsals are every Tuesday (Sept through May or June), 7:00-9:30pm at the Loch Raven High School, Towson, MD. There is not an audition for this position and there is no fee charged to orchestra members for participation in the orchestra. The successful candidate will be able to conduct the orchestra at rehearsals and performances.
