Overview: Hopkins Symphony Orchestra is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Conductor and Concert Orchestra Conductor. Hopkins Symphony Orchestra is a program of Johns Hopkins University, Homewood Arts Programs and is the only community orchestra in Baltimore City. Orchestra musicians are Johns Hopkins students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.

The Director of Finance and Operations leads a Finance/Operations team of three — a part time Bookkeeper, a full time Operations Manager, and a full time Porter/Janitor — and oversees all fiscal and operational aspects for Everyman Theatre. This position is a vital member of the senior staff and serves as an advisor to the Managing Director, the Artistic Director, the Board of Directors, and the Finance Committee.

Everyman Theatre seeks candidates for the position of Individual Giving Manager to join the growing Development Department. The Individual Giving Manager reports to the Director of Development and is responsible for the streamlining and expansion of the individual giving strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit new donor prospects and renew existing individual donors to achieve fundraising goals.

Position Description

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a full-time exempt position that reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serves as the financial advisor to management on issues including budget; audit; revenue and expenditures; government and contracts management; internal and external financial risks. The CFO leads the customer service-oriented finance department that supports multiple departments and functions. Direct reports include the Director of Facilities, Contracts Administrator, and the Finance Executive Assistant.

CFO Responsibilities

The Department of Music presents the UMBC Wind Ensemble, directed by Brian Kaufman, a large chamber group of approximately 40 musicians that performs great wind repertoire from octets to larger masterworks.

This concert will feature Emmy-nominated composer and violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (aka DBR)who is noted by major orchestras and arts institutions across the globe for blending funk, rock, hip-hop, and classical music into an energetic and experiential sonic form. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (The New York Times), DBR is perhaps the only composer whose collaborations traverse the worlds of Philip Glass, Bill T. Jones, Savion Glover, and Lady Gaga. UMBC’s Wind Ensemble and DBR will give the world premiere of the wind ensemble version of his Voodoo Violin Concerto. Additional music by DBR will be performed alongside works by Bach and Whitacre. Approximately 25 Baltimore City Public School students who participate in the Baltimore Symphony’s OrchKids program will also be featured in the concert alongside DBR and the UMBC Wind Ensemble. UMBC music education students are working each week at Booker T Washington Middle School to help the young musicians prepare for the performance.

The Department of Dance presents the annual Fall Dance Showcase. Students perform works by faculty, students and visiting artists, and the senior dance majors present their capstone choreographic projects. A different program each night features elaborate and exciting movement that explores the past, present, and future of human experience.

“The Mark Rice Collection and the Homo-Erotics of Photography after Stonewall”

Held in conjunction with the exhibition Man, Image, Idea: Photographs of Men from the Mark Rice Collection (read more here), this talk by James Smalls considers the social, cultural, and aesthetic dynamics of the nude figure in gay male photography, along with the complications of its reception during the last decade of the twentieth century. It explores the aesthetics and reception of the Mark Rice Collection of photographs, on exhibit in the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery from August 30th to December 12th, whose subject matter engages the mostly nude male body. The Mark Rice Collection is comprised of more than 80 photographs constituting part of the history of gay male photography produced after the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969, a significant historical event that fostered the visibility and optimistic development of a gay male subculture during the 1970s and early 1980s. Sadly, that carefree optimism turned to a melancholic introspection with the devastating onslaught of HIV/AIDS from the mid-to-late 1980s through the 1990s. Most of the photographs from the collection date to this latter decade and will be considered in this historical context.

James Smalls’ research and publications focus on the intersections of race, gender, and queer sexuality issues in nineteenth-century European art and in the art and culture of the black diaspora. He is the author of Homosexuality in Art (Parkstone Press, 2003), and The Homoerotic Photography of Carl Van Vechten: Public Face, Private Thoughts (Temple University Press, 2006). He is currently completing a book entitled Féral Benga: African Muse of Modernism.
