VISARTS 2018 EMERGING CURATOR CALL VisArts Invites Applications from Emerging Curators
VisArts invites applications from emerging curators to work with an experienced mentoring curator to develop and present an exhibition.
 
The VisArts Emerging Curator Program offers a unique opportunity for an emerging curator to work with an experienced mentoring curator to develop and present an exhibition and to assist in the presentation of the mentor’s exhibition. In an effort to develop expanded education programming/enhanced visitor experiences, the 2018 Emerging Curator and the Mentoring Curator will also focus on developing tools, templates, technological enhancements and funding strategies to support public programming that promotes social interaction, creative exchange and audience engagement.
 
VisArts will provide the Emerging Curator with an exhibition budget of $10,000. Additional funding and staff support for printing, promotions, and execution of exhibition programming is available. The program is one year and will begin in January 2018. Application Deadline is December 15, 2017, midnight.
 
The selection panel includes the VisArts’ Curator, Artist Advisory Council, Gallery Committee and 2018 Mentoring Curator.

In this presentation, Professor Smalls will consider the social, cultural, and aesthetic dynamics of the nude figure in gay male photography. Exploring the aesthetics and reception of the Mark Rice Collection of photographs, whose subject matter engages the mostly nude male body. The collection constitutes part of what is classified as gay male photography produced after the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion. The majority of the images date to the 1990s and will be considered in this historical context.

Responsibilities:     
The incumbent will be responsible for general maintenance of the print serials collection, assisting with planning and implementation of shifts.  Using various library automated systems, the incumbent will perform searches to help identify items for deselection. The incumbent is expected to assist users, shelve, maintain all equipment as well as perform other duties as assigned.  This position reports to the Chief Serials Technician.

Required Minimum Qualifications:     
Requires a High School Diploma or GED; Library or clerical experience desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:      
Must have good organization and communication skills; detail oriented, self-motivated, flexible; demonstrate the ability to work independently; proficient with word processing applications. Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets would be preferable.  This position requires physical labor—lifting and pushing loaded book trucks.

A background check may be required.

Salary: $16.10 per hour, 30-40 hours per week

The Department of Music presents the UMBC Percussion Ensemble and Salisbury University Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Tom Goldstein and Eric Shuster.

The UMBC Percussion Ensemble is a dedicated performing group of advanced percussion students. The ensemble is adventurous in its programming, with a repertoire that includes graphic-notation pieces, improvisational works, and theatre, as well as works by important early percussion composers, such as Alan Hovhaness, John Cage, and Carlos Chavez. The Ensemble has established a tradition of performing works by UMBC’s faculty and student composers, who sometimes include members of the ensemble.
