    <p><span>The University Startups Conference and Demo Day brings together a diverse audience of university Startup Officers, university startups, entrepreneurs, Fortune 1000/Global 1000 corporations, VCs, angel investors, policy leaders, and federal government agencies. The event provides a venue to form and maintain robust transaction networks among the participants with the aim to align university IP and startups with investor and corporate needs.</span><span><br></span></p>
    <p><span><span>This is a wonderful chance for UMBC students to network with tech entrepreneurs, as well as meet investors. While admission is exclusive and costly, it is totally <em>free</em> for UMBC students, so take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! </span></span></p>

  <Title>REMINDER: PNC Scholarship for Entrepreneurial UMBC Students</Title>

    <p>The PNC Scholars/Fellows Program is
    available for UMBC graduate and undergraduate students and awards can
    be applied as academic scholarships or “seed funding” for an entrepreneurial
    venture.  Deadline for applying is <strong>February 24, 2017</strong>.</p>
    
    <p><span>The
    PNC Scholars/Fellows Program provides awards up to $3,000 to outstanding UMBC
    students interested in becoming an entrepreneur. The scholarship will be
    awarded for the 2016 - 2017 academic year. The awards will be used as academic
    scholarships (up to $1,000), or as “seed funding” (up to $2,000) to launch new
    ventures or community based social entrepreneurship projects.  <br>
    <br>
    </span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong>CRITERIA:</strong></span></p>
    
    <p><span>·<span>        
    </span></span><span>Submit a 1-2 page personal
    statement about their interest in entrepreneurship.  The statement should:</span></p>
    
    <p><span>·<span>        
    </span></span><span>Describe the impact an academic
    scholarship will have on their future as an entrepreneur or social innovator or</span></p>
    
    <p><span>·<span>        
    </span></span><span>Describe how the award money will
    be used as “seed funding” to launch a new venture, or “seed funding” to launch
    a community based social entrepreneurship project.  Submit a preliminary
    budget outlining anticipated expenses.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>·<span>        
    </span></span><span>Submit an updated resume</span></p>
    
    <p><span>·<span>        
    </span></span><span>Have a minimum GPA of 3.0</span></p>

        Based on his experience helping companies raise their first round of capital, Michael
        will discuss how best to pitch potential investors. He'll outline the various
        traction companies typically need to raise money, who early stage investors
        typically are (the importance of knowing your audience), and the necessary
        items needed to include in your pitch.  He'll also go over example pitch
        decks from companies that have successfully raised money.<br>
        <br>
        This talk will be particularly helpful for students interested in entering the
        Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition this spring.  Michael will
        emphasize the key criteria the judges will be evaluating in the
        competition.  Don't miss this one!!!<br>

        <strong><u>About Michael</u></strong> <br>
        <br>
        Michael is the Director and only full-time employee at Baltimore Angels (</span><a href="http://www.baltimoreangels.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>http://www.baltimoreangels.com/</span></a><span>). He manages the group's deal
        flow, due diligence analysis, financial modeling, and all of their events,
        marketing, and partnerships. He is a Venture for America (</span><a href="http://www.ventureforamerica.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>http://www.ventureforamerica.org/</span></a><span>) alum, has started and successfully
        exited his own businesses, and has a background in tech, finance, and
        real-estate. He graduated with a BBA from Emory University's Goizueta Business

    <div><strong>Apply by April 1, 2017 for groups beginning in Fall 2017</strong></div>

    <div>The Dresher Center invites proposals for new Faculty Working Groups in the Humanities. Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups are collaborative, interdisciplinary communities of scholars working on humanities projects, research concerns, or matters of public interest. The Dresher Center provides support for the formation of these groups in an effort to promote intellectual exchange and support research activity in the humanities among scholars across campus. Working groups meet regularly and can use their funds to travel to sites or archives, host speakers, explore technologies, create new resources or materials, or other similar activities.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Faculty Working Groups can apply for up to $1,000 in annual support ($500 per semester) for their first-year activities. While faculty may come from any UMBC department, priority will be given to groups with at least one member from a humanities department.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Fundable activities include travel to sites or archives, speaker presentations, use/purchase of technology, creation of resources or materials, and support for regular meetings or workshops, etc. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Current Dresher Center Faculty Working Groups may also apply for continuation funding (same deadlines).</div>

We will consider the particular challenges and opportunities of artists working in universities. And we will look at ways to generate opportunities locally, nationally, and internationally across all disciplines: performing arts, visual art, social practice, film, and media," says Simonet.</span></div>

          <p><span><strong>Andrew Simonet</strong><span> </span>is a choreographer and writer, and the founder of Artists U. He is the author of Making Your Life as an Artist and works with artists nationally to build sustainable lives. He was, from 1993 to 2013, a founding co-director and choreographer of Philadelphia’s Headlong Dance Theater, creating experimental dance theater in Philadelphia and touring nationally. Andrew’s projects include CELL, a performance journey for one audience member at a time guided by your cell phone, and This Town is a Mystery, performances by four Philadelphia households in their homes, followed by a potluck dinner. His work been supported by The Creative Capital Foundation, The New England Foundation for the Arts, The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Rockefeller Foundation, The Ford Foundation, The Surdna Foundation, The Japan Foundation, and The National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been produced by The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, Dance Theater Workshop (NYC), The Philadelphia Museum of Art, P.S. 122 (NYC), Central Park Summerstage, and The Kyoto Arts Center, among others.
