VIEWING PARTY: Reading the Pictures /Seeing Science Salon

<Tagline>"How Science is Pictured in the Media and Public Culture"</Tagline>

The Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture (CADVC) is hosting a viewing party for the UMBC community to watch, listen and interact with an engaging panel who will analyze "How Science is Pictured in the Media and Public Culture" through ten key photos carefully culled from thousands of media images across sixteen categories of science.

If photography was invented so that the sciences could communicate with each other, now it’s as much about making that investigation relevant to consumers, investors and alternately curious, fearful or enthralled citizens. This discussion is interested in science as a social agenda and a media phenomenon. It’s about the popularization of science, the attitude and approach on the part of science toward its own activities and what the general public sees of it.

The distinguished panel for this salon includes: Rebecca Adelman, UMBC Professor of Media & Communication Studies; Ben de la Cruz, Multimedia Editor, Science Desk, NPR; Marvin Heiferman Curator, Project Director “Seeing Science”; Corey Keller, Curator, SFMOMA; Kurt Mutchler, Senior Editor, Science, Photography Department, National Geographic; and Max Mutchler, Space Telescope Science Institute, Hubble Heritage Project manager. The HangOut will be moderated by University of Maine professor and visual scholar, Nate Stormer.

The Reading the Pictures Salon series brings together experts on visual culture to converse about and analyze a group of ten news and media photographs in an online discussion format. This Salon is being jointly produced with Reading the Pictures and UMBC as a component of SEEING SCIENCE, the year-long project exploring the role photography plays in shaping, representing, and furthering the sciences.

Please register to also participate in the online discussion via your own device.

This is a free event open to all. Refreshments provided.

Fresh Ideas Win 2016 Idea Competition

<Tagline>Students pitched innovative ideas at annual Idea Comp</Tagline>

The Sports Zone was packed Thursday
night, November 17, for the 7th annual UMBC Idea Competition. Seven
ideas were pitched to a crowd of UMBC’s own, and a panel of three
judges. Stakes were high – awards ranged from $250 to $750 and all the
    ideas were original and innovative.

Both first place and best
presentation were awarded to Erin Patterson and Brendon Thach from Senko
Skipper. Their polished pitch and fabulous performance skills won the
hearts—and votes—of the crowd. They took home a hefty $1,000 win, $750 for
first place, and $250 for best presentation.

Senko Skipper
is a YouTube channel dedicated to inspiring people behind their screens to go out
and experience fun and quirky things in nature, by sharing their fish-related experiences
from around the states. Reflecting on
her involvement in the competition Erin said, "Participating
in the Idea Competition was a great way for us to really examine and define our business idea. We didn't
have the latest technology or the coolest
app, just an idea for a show that sparks discussion
and engagement and encourages building relationships with nature. We would like to encourage anyone thinking
about entering the Idea Competition to do
so! We're so grateful to have such a supportive community at UMBC".
With 2,570 subscribers and growing, Senko Skipper plans to organize events,
meet and greets and tournaments to get people outside and fishing.

Second place was awarded to Jay
McIntyre, who proposed an app called PLASMA (Personal Anxiety and Stress
Management). She took home $500 in prize money and some serious admiration from
the judges who told her, “There needs to be more people like you in this
world”. PLASMA seeks to gather everyone’s favorite de-stressing apps on one
platform where they can go to wind-down and gather themselves. While not only targeted
to people with anxiety disorders, the app is meant to help all people take a
breather from daily stress and anxiety from their fast-paced lives.

Finally, Solar Wind won third place
with a $250 prize. The team was comprised of Alex Sanchez, Andrew Bowling,
Joshua Piccoli, and Daniel Corteville. Solar Wind seeks to revolutionize both
solar and wind energy by combining the two to optimize resources. With swivel
technology, the team has designed a windmill with solar panels integrated into
the blades, so when it is very sunny but not as windy, the windmill can turn to
face the sun and vice versa.

Winners were chosen by a combination
of scores from the voting audience and the judging panel consisting of three
entrepreneurial alums: Neil Beller, President of Kit and Kaboodle Productions
and The Beller Group, Danielle Burnett, President of Applied Technology
Services, and Arsham Mirshah, Co-founder of Webmechanix.

A special thanks to our
participants, alumni judges, and to all the students who came out to listen and
help select the winners! Congratulations to all the Idea Competition
    participants!

Entrepreneur Panel Discussion Today!

<Tagline>ENTR Speaker Series Panel is TODAY in UC 310--12-1 pm</Tagline>

The semester is coming to a close with our last Speaker Series of Fall 2016, the Entreprenuers' Panel. Come join us today in UC 310 at 12-1 pm to listen to UMBC alumni and entrepreneurs talk about their experiences, trials, and lessons. We can't wait to see you there!

Spencer Holmes '05, Co-Founder and Operations Manager, PlateDate - B.A. Political Science, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

After graduating from UMBC, Spencer took a job at HSBC as a mortgage loan professional. After two years with HSBC, Spencer partnered with two colleagues to launch a used car business in Washington DC. After 6 years of growing the business he sold his interest in the dealership to pursue new ventures. In late 2012, in an effort to impress a girlfriend, Spencer came up with a plan to have a personal chef prepare a meal in his home. Days of back and forth with various chefs left a bad taste in his mouth and ultimately forced him to give up on the idea. After discussing his frustrations with a friend, they decided to launch a service called PlateDate. PlateDate streamlines the process of hiring a personal chef; bringing the restaurant experience into the home. Platedate currently has over 40 active chefs and operates in 4 major cities. PlateDate has been featured on Chopped, Fox News, Black Enterprise,

Baltimore Sun, and the Wall Street Journal. Spencer believes that the ability to control one’s emotions (mainly fear) and willingness to make mistakes are essential steps to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Tom Terenyi '03, Chief Technologist, We Are Kenya, Inc., Owner & Principal Consultant, Digital Natives Consulting, Co-Founder/CTO, G2Xchange - B.S. Information Systems Management, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Tom is a technologist, entrepreneur and philanthropist that has worked in various industries of all shapes and sizes since he graduated from UMBC. He has worked with the US Army, ADP, Loyola University, Department of the Treasury, AARP, US Bancorp, as well as many small businesses and startups, with roles ranging from web developer, to project manager, to consultant, to chief technology officer. Out of all these great experiences and roles, Tom is most passionate about helping others. In 2008 some friends and family helped to start We Are Kenya, a local non-profit of mostly volunteers who help extremely underserved children in the slum of Soweto, in East Africa - specifically, Nairobi, Kenya. This was born out of a desire to see children who literally lived on the street have opportunities for education, 3 square meals, and a roof over their heads. It has grown from humble beginnings of just a few students to now include housing, feeding and educating approximately 200 primary schoolchildren. Tom and his wife travel regularly to Kenya, fundraise locally, organize teams to travel abroad, coordinate well-drilling and building projects, and overall just try to humbly give of their time and talents to help better these children’s lives. Tom hopes to eventually be able to move in the next 3-5 years to full-time non-profit consulting, and possibly even move to Kenya full-time to better serve the people and causes there.

Samantha Walls, ‘12, Owner and President, Leaps Ahead Learning Center, B.A. Psychology, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Samantha is the owner and operator of Leaps Ahead Learning Center, a childcare center serving Arbutus and the surrounding areas. She graduated with a degree in psychology and an emphasis on child development and education. During her time at UMBC, she worked for a childcare center in the area and was disappointed in how it was managed. Looking to change the way childcare centers are operated, she opened an in-home daycare in 2013. After noticing a greater need for childcare in the area, she opened Leaps Ahead Learning Center in December 2015. In its first 9 months, the center has grown from an enrollment of 8 children to 54 children. UMBC provided Samantha with a foundation of early childhood education, child development and communication skills that help her successfully run the center everyday. Samantha runs all facets of the company including payroll, hiring, enrollment, substituting, inquiries and correspondence, and maintaining inventory and supplies. She supervises a staff of 12 employees and is hiring more every few months as the business grows. Samantha is also a member of the ABPA and has lived in Arbutus her entire life. Being an entrepreneur has taught her to think quickly, find solutions and manage a company that people are proud to work for. Samantha enjoys working together with her teachers and making sure they feel invested in the company
