Global Brigades at Involvement Fest

<Tagline>A club to consider joining! Alternative Spring Break Opp!</Tagline>

Have you heard about Global Brigades?

It is a large student organization focused on
community growth. They are planning a spring brigade to Panama during
Spring Break 2015. There are five different chapters this year under
Global Brigades: Medical/Public Health, Microfinance, Dental,
Water/Engineering, and Human Rights. They are a part of the Microfinance
Chapter, which has just recently begun.

The purpose of our organization is to go to Panama and set up a community
bank for local rural community residents of Panama. They want to give these
community members a chance to develop a culture of savings and growth.
Throughout the entire theyek of Spring break they will be shadowing bankers and
learning about the entire process of setting up a community bank, how the
community members will gain access to loans, and meeting the local
residents of Panama.

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to have a learning experience
away from the classroom, and it is all for a great cause. They are going to
be trying our very best to promote this program as much as possible to gain
new membership. For prospective members here are some dates to keep in mind:

September 3rd, Involvement Fest from 12-3

September 3rd, Microfinance Pulsera Sale from 12-3
(in the
        Commons Breezeway)

September 8th, Microfinance Information Session, Location TBA

September 19th, Global Brigades General Meeting, Lecture Hall 6: Physics 101

Their membership form is also available now for all prospective members. This is a requirement for those who would like to participate in our program. Everyone who completes a form will be considered a member of our chapter

EduPal Launches at UMBC

<Tagline>Simplify your semester, put EduPal to work for you!</Tagline>

Thursday night was the long-awaited official launch of EduPal; an innovative college tool designed to “simplify your semester.” At an unveiling at Federal Hill’s business incubator, Betamore, Markus Proctor, Founder of EduPal, demoed the tool to members of the Baltimore entrepreneurial community, budding CEOs, members of the prestigious Baltimore Angels, and Betamore owners, Greg Cangialosi and Mike Brenner. Proctor explained that “EduPal allows students to have homework, quizzes, exams, and just about
everything from their courses’ syllabus transformed into a colorfully organized
    calendar for FREE.”

After coming in third place at the Cangialosi Business
Innovation Competition in April 2014, the members of EduPal have been taking advantage of their
membership at Betamore; they have been working there most days during the week
to perfect the first iteration of the program. Proctor said, “Working at Betamore has been one of the best things that has happened to me.”

Proctor is supported by a handpicked team made up of Kimberly Hodges, the teams marketing guru, Harjit Singh, the Chief Technical
Advisor, and Walter Pearson III, handling Business Development. Markus was
through in trying to assemble the best team he could; he spent months scouring
Co-Founder Lab, Freelancer, and Craigslist to extend his network.

You may be asking, “What is EduPal?” That’s a fair question.
The name doesn’t embody what the program fully does. At the beginning of the
semester, have you taken a cell phone photo of your class schedule? I know I
have. EduPal, simply stated, it is a crowd-sourced calendar platform for all of your
academic requirements; but honestly, it does much more. It’s a web-based
application that is exceptionally mobile friendly which helps students stay
organized and on-track throughout the semester. Proctor explained, “Professors
and students can login to the system and collaborate on generating the semester’s
milestones; items such as class times and location, homework due dates,
quizzes, and exams all appear in one central location for each class you’re
enrolled in.” You can include any miscellaneous events you’re planning to
attend as well as personal or work schedules and see how they lineup next to
    your class requirements.

You’ll need a UMBC account to get started, but the clean
interface makes it easy to enroll in classes that are available. Students simply
need to browse by class, choose the appropriate section based on the brief description
and a picture of the professor, and click enroll. If the professor has already
uploaded the syllabus, student’s calendars will automatically and instantaneously be populated. If not, students have the ability to populate the information and get it approved by the professor. “If one member of your class does it, everyone benefits,” Proctor stated.

Currently, about 20 professors have taken the initiative to get started; the most embracing department to date has been the Chemistry department. They have posted all 16 sections of their CHEM 101 class that enroll nearly 900 students in the fall semester.

In addition to helping students stay organized, EduPal will be bringing user’s deals to make their college experience richer. The Bookstore has been gracious enough to be the first to step up to benefit the early adopters of the application. EduPal members currently receive a “Buy one get
one 50% off” deal on items with the UMBC logo on it.

The team is expecting to roll out a collaboration feature in September to help students schedule meetings and study sessions with their classmates. They will also be involved with the upcoming hackathon and are expecting to be hiring some enthusiastic and entrepreneurial java programmers before the end of the semester.

Be the first member of your upcoming class to start using
the EduPal application by visiting http://edupal.co

Student Entrepreneur Spotlight: Andrew Mavronicolas

<Tagline>Recent grad launches marketplace to benefit UMBC students</Tagline>

Andrew Mavronicolas is a recent graduate with a degree in Information Systems, and was a member of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Minor program.
As part of one of his classes, Mavronicolas and his team (Man Lee, Jones Moses, and Tyler Jaeger) began the process of developing an online marketplace to allow students to buy and sell their textbooks and lab equipment to each other.

The idea won them a runners up place in last Spring's Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC). They just recently launched the marketplace, now called Backpack 'Em at UMBC and have plans to launch it at other universities in the coming months.

1. Tell us a little about your company, and what makes your business

unique?

We created Backpack ‘Em to address the absence of a student centered marketplace. With costs of course materials constantly on the rise, students have been going to their social circles to make exchanges first.

Backpack ‘Em brings organization and ease of use into the equation. Browse by subject, course number, or teacher, and get a listing for books for sale by fellow students instantly. Schedule a meet up time with each other, and make the exchange. The power is in students hands. You’re not at the mercy of book distribution companies anymore.

The possibilities don’t stop with just course materials on Backpack ‘Em. We empower students to sell any school appropriate materials: books, lab equipment, furniture, concert tickets, and more!

2. Are there classes on campus that have helped you the most?

We started this project as a team in Dr. Karabatis’ IS420 (Database Application Development) class and learned a lot there in interfacing a database on the back-end with a user interface on the front-end. I also took Greg Cangialosi’s ENTR320 (Entrepreneurial Marketing) class where I learned how to approach today’s marketing landscape through a focus on inbound methods as opposed to ineffective outbound practices.

3. What are some resources that have helped you the most?

(Magazines, Books, Websites…)

If you are interested in reading a book geared more towards tech startups, I would recommend reading The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. His focus on innovation through iteration in the present is profound in today’s constantly changing technology landscape.

I also follow articles and blog posts in Inc. Magazine and 500 Startups for quick reads.

Normally I wouldn't recommend a book that I’m not completely finished with yet, however Influence by Robert Cialdini has been a very good read thus far and excellent for anyone looking to go into entrepreneurship, sales, marketing, along with any other positions that involve persuasion.

4. What is the toughest decision you have had to make in the last 6

months?

Whether or not to apply to the CBIC. At the time, we had just started to ramp up our efforts into making our IS420 project a reality. We could see that the time involved in the different stages of the competition would slow down our development of Backpack ‘Em, but decided to apply to it anyways.

It turned out to be a very good decision as we not only made it to the final stage of the competition, but also developed a business plan, worked closely with a mentor that was paired with our team, and pitched to a group of investors. Everything that we learned and experienced during this competition led to some integral changes which we have implemented in Backpack ‘Em today, along with more in store for the future.

5. What advice would you give other student entrepreneurs?

Never settle. If you dream of driving change and not holding the average day job, perseverance is key.

Make connections. Many entrepreneurs have been in your shoes before and are willing to provide some guidance, given that you prove your worth through your actions rather than your words. This also includes making connections with like-minded students. Everyone has a strength that they can bring to the table to make a stronger team - you can’t do everything on your own.

Fail Better. The best way to learn is from trying something first hand and failing at it so that you have an idea of how you can do it better the next time. Many people that you will come across will have great ideas, but these ideas will never come to fruition if they don’t have the courage to act upon them and turn them into reality.

Reach out to Andrew & Visit the Backpack 'Em Website to learn more.
