Announcing new Critical Disability Studies minor
Housed in the Department of English
Debuting in the Fall 2024 semester, the Department of English is now home to a new Critical Disability Studies minor.
Students in this interdisciplinary minor will encounter both the lived experiences of disability, past and present, and a critical analysis of intersecting systems of ableism, heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, colonialism, and capitalist violence.
To earn a minor in Critical Disability Studies, students will complete 15 credits of coursework: one introductory course (3 credits), two core courses (6 credits), and two elective courses (6 credits).

- PBHL/PHIL 375 - Philosophy of Medicine (Dr. Jessica Pfeifer)
- PSYC 305 - Children with Exceptionalities (Dr. Laura Rose)
- SOCY 351 - Sociology of Health, Illness, and Medicine (Dr. Karon Philips)

FYS 106: First-Year Seminar Introduction to Disability Studies (01-LEC (6751)
This three-credit course is designed to introduce the foundations of Disability Studies and meets Culture (GEP), Social Sciences (GEP), Culture (GFR), and Social Sciences (GFR) requirements. Meets in person.
**Recommended for Summer II, Winter or Spring:
American Sign Language (ASL) will fulfill UMBC’s GEP language requirement.

Hello Retriever Entrepreneurs!
The UMBC Launchpad accelerator is a 9-week cohort-based program where ventures prepare to go from pre-launch to launch, or for early-stage companies, create a pathway to accelerate growth.
Founders who are ready to fully commit to launching their venture and have validated their idea as an opportunity should apply. Participants are awarded up to $8,000 in non-dilutive funding for seed capital ($4k after 1 month and $4k at the end). Mentors will be assigned to each team.
Teams will perform deep customer discovery, develop a business model canvas, and then progress to a full commercialization plan and pitch deck. The goals of the Launchpad are to validate product-market fit and to hopefully formalize the venture and launch.
TIMELINE
Applications are due TOMORROW April 30th at 5PM!
Accepted teams will be notified by May 10th
Program runs from May 23rd-July 25th
Demo day will be hosted in September
Weekly meetings are mandatory and will last 2-4 hours and will likely be Thursdays at 4pm
Learning objectives:
• Develop familiarity with Lean LaunchPad concepts and tools such as customer discovery, value proposition design, and a lean business model canvas through the Leanstack model and platform.
• Understand customers’ problems (“pain points”) from THEIR perspective
• Identify modifications to your assumptions required to achieve product-market fit
• Build connections to the commercial ecosystem (i.e. customers, suppliers, funders) for your innovation
• Develop a commercialization roadmap identifying key milestones and required resources to move your idea forward
• Explore the size of your potential market, assess the competition, and identify a beachhead (first) target market
All accepted teams will be required to complete a contract in order to participate and receive the stipend.

Short-Term Changes to Library Accounts & Accessing Materials
From May 17 at 5 PM until May 23 at 7 AM
We are switching to a new Integrated Library System (ILS) on May 23, 2024. Certain library functions will be paused from May 17 at 5 PM until May 23 at 7 AM in order to prepare.
- Why is the pause happening?
We are upgrading our library software at the end of May. The system’s data must be prepared for export and then migrated to the new software.
- Can I still check out and return things during the pause?
Yes, you will be able to check out and return library materials, although you will not see checkouts and returns reflected on your library account immediately. Late fines will not accrue during the pause, but you will still be responsible for lost items and damage fees. You must bring your campus ID to check out materials from May 17 to May 23.
- Can I still request a laptop during the pause?
No, you will not be able to request laptops during the pause. You can still check out laptops from the Circulation desk; call us at 410-455-2354 to learn what’s in stock.
- Can I check out a room key or calculator during the pause?
Yes, you will be able to borrow specialty room keys, calculators, and headphones from the Circulation desk. Please bring your UMBC card with you.
- Can I request something from another USM campus (e.g., a book from College Park) during the pause?
No, you will not be able to request books/other materials from USM campuses. Requests made through ILLiad will function as usual.
- Can I request a book or DVD from UMBC for local pickup?
No, this process will be turned off during the migration. Books and media will be available in the library’s open stacks. If you need an accommodation to retrieve materials, contact us at circdept@umbc.edu.
- I requested a book before the pause and it’s still in process. Where is it?
Please contact Circulation at circdept@umbc.edu or 410-455-2354 for updates on any in-progress hold requests.
- I returned something but it’s still on my account. Why?
Items returned between May 17 and 23 will still show on your account even if they’ve been returned. If an item is still on your account on May 28, contact us at circdept@umbc.edu.
- I’m graduating and have a question about library fines. Who do I talk to?
Please get in touch with the Circulation department at circdept@umbc.edu for time-sensitive financial matters.
- Can I still get a Special Borrower card?
No, we cannot add any Special Borrowers during the pause. Please sign up for your card before May 17 at 5 PM or wait until May 23.
