A "Snapshot" on Exhibit Development

<Tagline>By Jessica Riley, Special Collections graduate assistant</Tagline>

In the fall of 2019, I started my graduate program at UMBC and my new job as a graduate assistant for UMBC Special Collections. I was elated that as a first-year student I was tasked with curating an exhibit for our Special Collections Reading Room. I saw the opportunity as a way to become more familiar with our collections and also to have more experience with curation. In October of 2019, I began the exhibition development process which started with formulating it, through to plans for installation, and finally this moment to reflect on the process as a whole.

How it Started

Exhibits of course start in a number of ways. For this exhibit, our curatorial team knew we wanted to highlight the UMBC Photography Equipment Collections, however we did not know what narrative we wanted to tell or what objects would go into the exhibit. We did know we had many interesting cameras that did not make it into the large display of cameras that users of the Special Collections Reading Room are accustomed to seeing.

Existing photography equipment case in UMBC AOK Special Collections Reading Room.

Picking Objects

I initially spent many days in the large Special Collections storage room in the Library’s lower level. Most days I wore a mask (pre-COVID mask wearing) because I noticed many of the older cameras have chemicals that are beginning to break down inside of them. I slowly found the equipment I wanted to feature, mostly based on their appearance and always with the reading room audience in mind. One of the two display cases is about personal cameras, featuring a whole line of cameras that were designed for consumer audiences and fans of pop culture, from Mickey Mouse to spy gear (hi, 90s kids). I think people will enjoy seeing the unique cameras I selected.

Kodak Petite (c. 1930s). This camera came in the Kodak Coquette set which featured this blue art deco camera, a makeup compact mirror, and a lipstick.

The second of the two display cases in the reading room will have projectors, all of which I originally chose based on their aesthetics. My favorite here is the magic lantern which is from circa 1600s and used candlelight to project images from glass slides.

A typical day in Special Collections. I took this picture one week before the pandemic shutdown in March 2020.

Time for Installation

By late February, I was ready to begin pulling the objects from the lower level of the library and bringing them to the reading room. I thought it was time to install the exhibit. Up to this point, I had only seen everything coming together in a Google Drive folder with images of each piece. I drafted removal forms for all of the objects and those forms will be placed in the former storage locations. The equipment which I had pulled stayed on a cart and was moved to safe keeping until installation can be done. Unfortunately, I was not able to install the exhibit before the campus closure in early March. I am now working remotely and hope to install the exhibit this coming Spring before I graduate.

Staging cameras and visualizing groupings on top of an archival storage box before installing shelving into the case.

Reflection

What this specific exhibit experience has shown me is that sometimes the job of professionals in cultural institutions is to provide knowledge of what that institution has in their care and the possibilities for further research by their patrons. I would argue that the overarching narratives of the two cases are not profoundly deep. Rather, I hope this selection of cameras and projectors will show our patrons the equipment we have, how three-dimensional objects can be used to tell narratives, big or small, and perhaps spark memories in those that remember using them.

Look out for the exhibit in the reading room display cases when Special Collections safely reopens to the public!

Jessica Riley is a second-year master’s student in UMBC's Department of History with a track in public history. Jessica's favorite part about working in Special Collections is that there is always a new topic to learn about from fanzines to daguerreotypes.

First, there are representations of the background of Baltimore, its Black community history, the evolution of its neighborhoods and schools. Next, there are items that indicate the hardships African Americans have faced, Jim Crow laws, blockbusting, and police brutality. Finally there is material related to the Civil Rights Movement, ever-evolving struggles for fairness, people power, and activism.

African American history is a wealth of complexities. This exhibit provides insight into what are just pieces of a massive narrative of the Black experience in America through literature, alternative press publications, and photographs by Roland Freeman.

Special Collections is open Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m, with extended hours until 8pm on Thursdays, and is located on the first floor of the Library through the Gallery.

Center for the History of Microbiology/ASM Archives exhibit

    <Tagline>Library Rotunda, all Fall semester</Tagline>

The history of science collections held in the Center for the History of Microbiology and the Center for Biological Sciences Archives are the focus of this year's Archives Month festivities at UMBC. Jeff Karr, the archivist for the Center for the History of Microbiology and American Society for Microbiology (ASM) library and archives, has curated a small exhibit in the Library about famed microbiologist Dr. Cornelis B. van Niel.

CORNELIS B. VAN NIEL (1897-1985): Bringing the Delft School to America

Shortly after arriving at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) in Pacific Grove, CA from his native Delft, Cornelis B. van Niel fundamentally redefined the process of photosynthesis, suggesting that it was water, not carbon dioxide, which was the source of oxygen released in this process. Based on analogy from the metabolism of the purple sulfur bacteria, his insight offered an early example of the value of using microorganisms to illuminate larger biological processes. His suggestion that green plant photosynthesis was only a specific instance of a more generalized metabolic process helped demonstrate the "Unity in Biochemistry" which had been posited by his mentor in Delft, Albert Jan Kluyver.

van Niel was also an admired teacher. From 1930 until 1962 his short summer course in "General Microbiology" drew increasing numbers of scientists from a wide variety of disciplines who were enthralled by his animated lecture style and his broad knowledge of the bacteria.

In 2004 the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) designated the Loeb Laboratory at HMS as a Milestones in Microbiology site based on van Niel's contributions to the microbiological sciences. ASM maintains its archival and historical collections in the Center for the History of Microbiology in the Albin O. Kuhn Library, and materials from these collections illustrating van Niel's life and work have been put on display in the Library Rotunda. The exhibit will remain in the Rotunda through the end of the semester.

Cavanuagh camera exhibit in the Library Rotunda

  <Tagline>Open May 21 – August 11, 2013</Tagline>

This Spring semester, History graduate student Dot Alexander worked with Chief Curator Tom Beck to research and design an exhibit of cameras from the Library's Cavanaugh collection. Please enjoy Dot's report below:

Come to the Library Rotunda this summer and see a collection of vintage cameras. Imagine a world without Instagram and instant photography! This camera collection demonstrates twentieth-century technical innovations that shifted photography from a professional, time consuming hobby to an amateur sport.

The twentieth century changed how and why we took photographs. Cameras had faster mechanical shutters, rangefinders, exposure meters, flash, and automatic technology. They became smaller, easier to use, and after the first CPU (central processing unit) in 1981—smarter! These cameras show us how we got from the first Kodak in 1888 to the iPhone.
Pictured above: Kodak Vest Pocket Model B c.1925-c.1934

Featured cameras include a Kodak Premoette c.1909-1912, an Ernemann Heag IV c.1925, an early Polaroid c. 1955, and pioneer 35 mm cameras such as the Argus A and the Kodak 35. Cameras donated to Special Collections by William B. Cavanaugh (June 2, 1924-January 19, 2013)

Remember: Special Collections is open by appointment during the summer semester!

Thank you, Dot!
