These research guides cover artificial intelligence, AI literacy, and AI ethics; government information and data rescue for the preservation of accurate, trusted online sources; and newspaper databases and popular news sources compiled into one location for convenient, easy access.

UMBC, along with 17 other libraries across the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI), implemented a new OneSearch library discovery system called Primo. This system migration is a huge step forward to modernize the Library’s current functionality and usability, increasing cooperation with other systems across our campus and with other academic institutions across the state. Since it went live in May 2024, the Library has worked diligently to learn this new system to better assist faculty, students, and staff. 

Primo now powers the AOK OneSearch, the Library’s main search bar on the home page, streamlining search functions within UMBC’s resources, USMAI’s availability, and beyond. You will notice more features that will allow you to easily manage your loans, requests, and fines/fees. We encourage all UMBC community members to familiarize themselves with this new, exciting system by visiting library.umbc.edu to get started with a search!

We are upgrading our library software at the end of May. The system’s data must be prepared for export and then migrated to the new software.

Yes, you will be able to check out and return library materials, although you will not see checkouts and returns reflected on your library account immediately. Late fines will not accrue during the pause, but you will still be responsible for lost items and damage fees. You must bring your campus ID to check out materials from May 17 to May 23.

No, you will not be able to request laptops during the pause. You can still check out laptops from the Circulation desk; call us at 410-455-2354 to learn what’s in stock.

Yes, you will be able to borrow specialty room keys, calculators, and headphones from the Circulation desk. Please bring your UMBC card with you.

No, you will not be able to request books/other materials from USM campuses. Requests made through ILLiad will function as usual.

All UMBC Library users have access to the online SAGE Campus database in the month of February. Sage Campus is a suite of online learning materials for social science research methods. It has 37 self-paced online courses on quantitative and qualitative research topics such as data literacy, data science, research skills, and getting published.

Responsibilities:

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at UMBC is seeking a Maryland Traditions Archivist/General Associate for special collections.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Processes new and existing archival collections preserved within the Maryland Traditions Archives at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), which are generated through the regular activity of the Maryland Traditions folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) and its constituents.
  • Following department and professional standards, the Maryland Traditions Contract Archivist: Creates finding aids compliant with archival metadata standards; develops detailed inventories of materials; catalogs materials for archival and research use; drafts finding aids for the collections; re-houses materials in accordance with archival best practices; identifies materials in need of preservation; and integrates collections previously held at MSAC, MDSA, and regional folklife centers into unified collections at UMBC.
  • Maintains and keeps updated master inventory of materials processed to date and inventory of materials to be processed.
  • Manages the Maryland Folklife at UMBC website and assists with promotion for ongoing projects under the UMBC Maryland Folklife Network grant.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • At the time of appointment, an ALA-accredited Master's degree in Archives or
    Library/Information Science with an emphasis on formal archival education and
    training, OR a Master's degree in history, American Studies, or other relevant
    discipline, with experience in archives, archival course work, or archival certificate. Early career archivists encouraged to apply.
  • One year of experience working in an archives, special collections, or comparable setting (may include as an intern, volunteer, or student worker).
  • Familiarity with EAD, DACS, and other archival standards. Excellent computer skills, including experience with a collection management system such as ArchivesSpace or PastPerfect.
  • Physical ability to lift archival boxes weighing up to 40 pounds and to push a loaded cart weighing up to 200 pounds.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • At least six months of archival processing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability and initiative in reference, outreach, and instruction.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of creating and managing digital content.
  • Supervisory and project management experience
