    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Based on higher than expected turnout for last week’s prototype of the </span><strong><span>Planning Instructional Technology for Online Teaching </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=92599" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>(PIVOT) Live webinars</span></a></strong><span>, DoIT is offering a monthly repeat of the </span><span><strong>five 60-minute webinars in five days</strong></span><span> approach on the following dates (</span><span>up to 100 people can participate, but registration via myUMBC is required).</span></p><p><span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events?mode=upcoming&amp;tag=pivot-june" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">June 22 to 26 at 10 a.m.</a></span></p><p><span>July 20 to 24  at 10 a.m. (canceled)</span></p><p><span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events?mode=upcoming&amp;tag=pivot-august" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">August 10 to 14 at 12:00 p.m.</a></span></p><p><span>The PIVOT webinars will include the following topics:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>Organizing &amp; Designing an Online Course </span></p></li><li><p><span>Active Learning Strategies</span></p></li></ul><ul><li><p><span>Engaging Students &amp; Building Online Community</span></p></li><li><p><span>Reconceptualizing Online Assessments</span></p></li><li><p><span>Supporting Students and Monitoring Progress</span></p></li></ul><p><span>As a reminder, last week’s webinars on these topics were recorded and available on the </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=92599" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>original announcement</span></a><span> and DoIT’s </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/itnm/academic-continuity/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Academic Continuity</span></a><span> site (a PIVOT site is also under development). The recordings will also be paired with key instructional technology FAQs to form the basis of </span><span><strong>PIVOT Solo</strong></span><span>, which is designed as a totally asynchronous, self-paced to enable a more deliberate approach to online teaching than was the case in Spring 2020. </span></p><p><span>Last week’s turnout for the first </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=92599" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>prototype</span></a><span> of the PIVOT webinars included the following:</span></p><ul><li><p><span>We had 1,030 registrations with 764 attendees for one or more sessions (72 people attended all 5 sessions and accounted for 360 attendees).</span></p></li><li><p><span>There were 263 unique participants during the week, 122 of whom are teaching this summer, which was our most pressing need.</span></p></li><li><p><span>To date, we've received 100 survey responses from the 263, and  77% rated the webinars as helpful, 8% not-helpful.</span></p></li></ul><p><span>As discipline-specific or cohort-based plans develop within Colleges, DoIT will use the PIVOT webinars &amp; PIVOT Solo “playlists” to support such groups, which will inform the synchronous and asynchronous approach of PIVOT + that was previously announced.</span></p><p><span>In addition to new monthly offerings of PIVOT during the summer, DoIT’s Instructional Technology team has also announced focused training in Blackboard Essentials, Collaborate, Panopto, and VoiceThread, which were popular topics throughout the week.   <Title>DoIT Offers PIVOT Webinars for Online Teaching</Title>

  <Title>Quality Matters Training Opportunities</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><a href="http://www.qualitymatters.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Quality Matters</a> (QM) is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to improve online and blended course quality to benefit online learners. The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop is QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online and hybrid courses.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.qualitymatters.org/professional-development/workshops/higher-ed-appqmr" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop</a> is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM Rubric and process of course review. It is particularly helpful to those new to QM or those considering the adoption of a quality assurance process for online and blended learning. The APPQMR is also the prerequisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is required to become a QM Peer Reviewer.</p><p>Both face-to-face and online training opportunities are available to UMBC faculty from our sister USM institutions, Towson University, Salisbury University, and Frostburg University.</p><p><strong>Face to Face Option - Towson University</strong></p><p>Two hands-on Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshops are available:</p><ul><li><span>Friday, September 27, 2019</span></li><li><span>Thursday, November 7, 2019</span></li></ul><p>All workshops are held in the Cook Library, Room 404B from 9 AM – 4:30 PM. The cost of the workshop will be $30 (plus parking) and will include a continental breakfast and lunch along with a Quality Matters booklet and other course materials. </p><ul><li>Register online at Towson's Office of Academic Innovation website. Select the "USM Only - Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Workshop (APPQMR)"</li><li>Towson representatives will email payment information and directions. Contact the <a href="mailto://oai@towson.edu?subject=APPQMR%20Workshop" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Office of Academic Innovation</a> via email if you have questions.</li><li>Attendees must be present for the entire day to receive credit for the APPQMR certificate. </li></ul><p>Parking is available <a href="http://www.towson.edu/maps/index.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">on campus</a> in the Towsontown Garage for $12 for the entire day. The individual participant is responsible for his/her own parking fee.</p><p><strong>Online Option - Salisbury University &amp; Frostburg University</strong></p><p>Salisbury University &amp; Frostburg University invite USM faculty and staff to join a 2- week, facilitated online Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop. Participants need approximately 7-8 hours per week to complete this workshop. Four sessions are scheduled:</p><ul><li>October 8-22, 2019</li><li>November 12-26, 2019</li><li>February 11-25, 2020</li><li>July 7-21, 2020</li></ul><p>The cost associated with the dedicated online APPQMR is $25. To register for the workshop, <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">open an RT ticket</a> with the individual’s name and department.   <Title>DoIT Welcomes 3 New Staff to Instructional Technology</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>It is my pleasure to both introduce and welcome the three newest members of the Instructional Technology team in DoIT: Chimaobi (Mobie) Nwaokomah (pictured at left), L</span><span>aura Wyatt, </span><span>and Collin Sullivan. They round out the team that added</span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=84246" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span> Dr. Susan Biro in her new role as Online Learning Coordinator </span></a><span>in early May of this year. These new staff members add depth and breadth to the existing team as </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=83448" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>DoIT continues its investment in Instructional Technology</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span><span>Chimaobi (Mobie) Nwaokomah joins the team as an Instructional Designer. Mr. Nwaokomah graduated with a Master of Public Administration from the University of Baltimore and completed his Master of Arts in Instructional Systems Development from UMBC in Spring 2019. He also completed graduate certificates from UMBC in Instructional Technology and Distance Education. He previously served as an Instructional Designer and LMS System Administrator at the University of Baltimore, and an e-Learning Specialist at that same institution.</span></span></p><p><span>Laura Wyatt also joins the team as an Instructional Designer. Ms. Wyatt graduated with an M.S. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from McDaniel College. In her most recent position, she served as the Associate Director of Instructional Technology at McDaniel College and previously served as their Learning Management System Administrator. </span></p><p><span>Collin Sullivan joins the team as a Learning Management System (LMS) Support Specialist. Mr. Sullivan earned both his Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and his Bachelor of Arts in Economics here at UMBC in May 2019.  He served as an intern in the Instructional Technology office from 2015-2018 where he demonstrated his technical skills and abilities, giving him the foundation to thrive in his new role and support </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=83448" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>UMBC’s migration to Ultra</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>Please join us in welcoming these three dynamic individuals into the UMBC family.   <Title>DoIT Welcomes Susan Biro as Online Learning Coordinator</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>I am pleased to announce that Dr. Susan Biro has accepted UMBC’s Online Learning Coordinator position in the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). She will start full-time on Wednesday, May 8, and serve as the primary point of contact for DoIT’s collaboration with the Division of Professional Studies (DPS) in developing hybrid and online applied master’s programs as part of the new, </span><a href="https://doit.umbc.edu/news/?id=83448" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>strategic investment</span></a><span> in instructional technology. </span></p><p><span>With more than 17 years of experience in distance education, Susan brings expertise in many facets of designing, developing, implementing, and administering online programs. In her most recent position as Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Technologies at Prince George’s Community College, she was responsible for planning and coordinating the eLearning and technology training teams in their support of online/hybrid courses. Prior to that role, Dr. Biro served as the Director of Distance Education at Carroll Community College where she was responsible for not only ensuring effective use of the learning management system in developing and delivering online, hybrid, and onsite courses, but also ensuring comprehensive administrative services were in place to support online faculty and students. Finally, as Dean of the Online Campus at Berkeley College of New York and New Jersey, Susan served as the chief academic officer for online programs where she mentored full time and adjunct online faculty, managed the planning and creation of programs to enhance online student retention, and assisted in creating institutional standards for credit-for-prior-learning and portfolio development.</span></p><p><span>Susan earned both her Doctor of Education with a specialization in Leadership in Higher Education and her Master of Education in Adult Education from Widener University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Delaware State University.</span></p><p><span>Please join us in welcoming Susan into the UMBC family.
