Apply for Certificate in Open Educational Practices Program Exciting opportunity for faculty in Open Education Practices
The Open Education Network is accepting applications for faculty and librarian partners to receive a certification for open educational practices (OEP). Applicants should be higher education faculty who have a lesson, unit, or other educational experience that they wish to transform through the use of open educational practices and teach in the spring of 2023 and practicing librarians ideally from the same institution as the faculty. The Certificate in OEP offers formal training in open educational practices grounded in the principles of social justice, a community of peers, and expert instructors in order to transform learning to be more accessible and inclusive. Librarians and faculty who successfully complete the full program will receive a Certificate in Open Educational Practices from the Open Education Network.  

About the Certificate in Open Educational Practices
The Certificate in OEP is a professional development program that will create actionable pathways for faculty and librarians to implement open education for the transformation of learning. 

Faculty and librarian partners will complete a nine-week long, asynchronous course in the fall about the range of open educational practices with modules on the hallmarks of open educational resources, copyright, and Creative Commons licensing, the hallmarks of open educational practices, the benefits and limitations of OEP, accessibility, and student empowerment and agency. Together, the faculty and librarian pairs will create an Action Plan to be implemented in the spring that seeks to transform learning through the power of open education. 

In addition, the cohort will benefit from close engagement with program faculty -- open education leaders who have gained expertise through experience, professional development, and participation in various national initiatives. The integrated components of the certification program include online content, instructor-led cohorts, and action plan support and assessment. 

In order to assure personalized attention to participants throughout the program, the cohort will be limited to 15 teams or 30 participants total.

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals for the 2022 OER Grant Program.

For 2022, M.O.S.T. is seeking proposals for two grant programs. Learn more below. 
 

Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for its Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program, which supports faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

The 2022 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants are for those faculty interested in unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation and publication of OER in high-need areas.

Available grants in 2022:

  • Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice)
  • Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program)

Institutional OER Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for the Institutional OER Grant Program, which supports strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

For 2022, selected institutions will be awarded $20,000 grants to support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success. In addition, grantees will receive strategic planning and implementation support for their projects from M.O.S.T. in the form of consultations and regular monthly check-ins.

Apply now for a Spring 2022 Lumen Circles Fellowship focused on Effective Teaching Using OER

Be part of an OER-focused virtual learning community at no cost to faculty or their institutions—all fees are covered by the Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative (M.O.S.T.)

The Maryland Open Source Textbook Initiative (M.O.S.T.) invites faculty from two-year and four-year colleges and universities to apply for a Spring 2022 Lumen Circles Fellowship focused on Effective Teaching Using OER. Fellows will engage in an OER-focused virtual learning community at no cost to them or to their institutions—all fees are covered by M.O.S.T. Faculty must be teaching with OER in at least one course during their time in the Fellowship. 

Lumen Circles provide opportunities for Fellows to virtually connect with other faculty members as they explore effective instructional practices and apply them in their own teaching. Through participation in an OER-focused Lumen Circle, Fellows can learn, share ideas, and develop professionally in relation to teaching with OER, OER-based adaptive courseware, and/or open pedagogy. Lumen Circles work well for any faculty member, in any discipline, at any stage of their career.

Fellowships include:
  • An engaging community of practice with faculty from multiple institutions over 6 or 9 weeks (see below for details)
  • Weekly activities to explore, apply, and reflect on your use of effective teaching practices in relation to OER (~2 hours/week) 
  • Opportunities to build on your strengths and expand your teaching with OER 
  • The ability to set teaching goals and track progress
  • Asynchronous engagement in a virtual platform (website) to fit your schedule 
  • The ability to earn a Lumen Circles Fellowship Certificate in Effective Teaching Practice
Circle themes offered to Maryland faculty through the M.O.S.T. Initiative include two options: 
  • Teaching with OER & OER-enabled Pedagogy (9-week program): Explore evidence-based teaching strategies in the context of using OER and OER-enabled pedagogy. Develop your teaching capabilities with techniques that apply the principles of open education to engage students and strengthen their success using openly licensed content. (Note: Prior to the fellowship, you should identify OER content you plan to use with students during the term of your fellowship.)
  • Success Accelerator for OHM or Waymaker Courseware (6-week program): Explore and apply evidence-based teaching practices using Lumen Learning’s OER-based courseware. Share ideas and enrich your Lumen courseware implementation with coaching and peer support around pedagogy, course design, use of learning data, and best practices to increase student engagement and success. Suitable for new or veteran Lumen courseware users.

The term "Open Educational Resources (OER)" refers to not only high-quality textbooks, but also a number of additional teaching and learning aids called ancillary materials. Ancillary materials include presentations, quizzes, multimedia, interactive simulations, writing prompts, and more. In this session, we'll conduct an overview of different types of ancillary materials, where you can find them, and survey different platforms for delivery. We'll also cover how ancillary materials can be integrated with your textbook or used to align your content to course outcomes.

Interactive Textbooks with H5P
Friday, March 25, 2022 | 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
With the shift to digital learning in online classrooms, we are reminded about the potential of OER to better engage with our students. This session will introduce H5P, a free tool that lets you create interactive content to embed in your textbooks. We'll look at the range of content types in H5P, see examples from published textbooks, and highlight other tools you can use to make dynamic OER.

OER Publishing with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Core
Wednesday, April 27, 2022 | 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
In this session, we'll discuss how Rebus' open publishing differs from traditional models by keeping diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind throughout the production cycle. Working with the principles of DEI is critical to creating valuable resources, and can have impacts beyond improving the quality of the OER. We'll highlight how creators in Maryland have adopted this approach in their projects.

During her time at Rebus, Apurva has worked closely with the teams of over 40 open textbooks including Blueprint for Success in College and Career, Media Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and the Introduction to Philosophy series. She is the co-author of The Rebus Guide to Publishing Open Textbooks (So Far) and has contributed to the award-winning Guide to Making Open Textbooks with Students. Apurva received the Support Specialist Award for Excellence from Open Education Global in 2020.

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals for the 2022 OER Grant Program.

For 2022, M.O.S.T. is seeking proposals for two grant programs. Learn more below. 

Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for its Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program, which supports faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

The 2022 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants are for those faculty interested in unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER and the creation and publication of OER in high-need areas.

Available grants in 2022:

  • Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice)
  • Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program)

Institutional OER Grant Program

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for the Institutional OER Grant Program, which supports strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland’s postsecondary institutions through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice.

For 2022, selected institutions will be awarded $20,000 grants to support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success. In addition, grantees will receive strategic planning and implementation support for their projects from M.O.S.T. in the form of consultations and regular monthly check-ins.

All proposals must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.  NOTE: Any applications must first be routed to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) — before they are submitted. UMBC faculty should work with the grant staff in their units or College to prepare and route their applications.

As this year’s virtual “host” of the 2021 Open Education Conference (October 18-22, 2021), the Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is excited to announce the call for proposals is now open!

Deadline: Friday June 18th at 11:59pm PDT

The theme of the 2021 Open Education Conference is “Making Open for All.” This theme puts action for equity and inclusion at the center of this year’s event, building on last year’s focus on reimagining open education as a solution to urgent challenges.

The idea of “all” has always been at the heart of open education. Openness is about enabling everyone, everywhere to participate in sharing knowledge, recognizing that education is a universal human right. There are many ways that open education has succeeded at breaking down barriers and expanding participation, yet there is much work ahead to reach the ideal of all.

“Making Open for All” is not a destination. It is a process that involves ongoing, intentional action to build resources, practices, and systems that are open for all people, languages, cultures, and contexts. It also involves understanding the limits to openness, such as its intersections with privacy and Indigenous knowledge. This year’s conference seeks to inspire the open education field to work together toward a more equitable and inclusive future.

Proposals are enthusiastically welcomed from everyone with an interest in sharing information about open education, especially from students. Since many topics overlap, proposals may list up to three relevant topics.

The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) Initiative is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals for the 2021 OER Grant Program. For 2021, M.O.S.T. is seeking proposals for two grant programs. Learn more below. 

Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative is seeking proposals for its Faculty OER Mini-Grant Program, which supports faculty efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland's postsecondary institutions through the incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. 

The 2021 M.O.S.T. faculty mini-grants are for those faculty interested in unique opportunities to engage in communities of practice related to teaching with OER, creation and publication of OER in high-need areas, and evaluation of OER use in relation to student success. For 2021, this program is open to all postsecondary institutions in Maryland, both public and private.

Available grants for 2021:

  • Adopt/Adapt OER ($1,000 grant + Participation in the Lumen Circles Community of Practice);
  • Create/Revise and Publish OER ($2,000 grant + Participation in the Rebus Textbook Success Program); and
  • Evaluate OER ($3,000 grant + Dedicated Coaching)

Institutional OER Grant Program
The Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative  is seeking proposals for the Institutional OER Grant Program, which supports strategic institutional efforts to increase access, affordability, and achievement for students at Maryland's postsecondary institutions through more systemic incorporation of open educational resources (OER) into teaching practice. 

For 2021, two or three institutions will be awarded $20,000 grants to support significant advances in OER adoption, scaling, and sustainability in support of student success. In addition, grantees will receive strategic planning and implementation support for their projects from M.O.S.T. in the form of consultations and regular monthly check-ins. For 2021, this program is open to all postsecondary institutions in Maryland, both public and private

Institutions applying for these grants should be able to articulate a vision for how OER will help them achieve strategic goals and explain how the campus will nurture and sustain this next-level work after the funding period ends. 

Access and Review Request for Proposals

All proposals must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, March 1, 2021.
