Book Club: "On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous" by Ocean Vuong

<Tagline>An immigrant novel and a work of autofiction.</Tagline>

The book is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. <Tagline>What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know</Tagline>

Published in 2019, Talking to Strangers is the most recent book from best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell. Starting in the early years of the 21st century, Gladwell became a phenomenon for his writing method and unique way of communicating information through a series of seemingly, at least on the surface, unfocused stories and anecdotes. The book is a fascinating examination of the ways in which we as humans approach the issue of trust and assuming that the many strangers that we deal with are being truthful with us, even though we have all heard many horror stories of times when this has not been the case. Gladwell takes us through a series of interesting historical and modern-day examples that prove his point, and in the process constructs a thought-provoking narrative.

Join today! https://www.pbc.guru/umbc

Suggested Reading Schedule:
On Thursday, August 6th, kick-off our reading and discussion by responding to the Pre-Reading Question
By August 20th, finish reading the introduction and chapters 1 and 2
By August 27th, finish reading chapters 3-5
By September 3rd, finish reading chapters 6 and 7
By September 17th, finish reading chapters 8 and 9
By October 1st, have the book finished and join in on the End of Book discussion!
