To Our Queer and Trancestors: Time Traveling

    <Tagline>Pride Month 2021</Tagline>

At Lavender Celebration this year, I shared that every day we create LGBTQ+ futures and that this is a declaration and imagining of new realities. Our very existence is a declaration and a celebration. I want us to spend some time in the past as well - to time travel this Pride Month. Let’s honor the folx who have come before us and added to the imagining of Queer and Trans futures. Our Queer and Trancestors who imagined new time and new realities, who imagined and resisted and fought for new realities. Take the time to honor them, know them and thank them.

Who are your Queer and Trancestors?

To Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera

To Gloria Anzaldúa and Alexa Negron Luciano

To Tony McDade and Nina Pop

To those who lived and loved in time past with the hopes of times to come.

I share with you this poem by Jose Richard Aviles (they/them/he) (@soynalgona on Instagram), an activist, social worker, and urban planner. I highly encourage you to check out the spoken word version of it on Instagram and we will share it on our i3b Instagram (@umbc_i3b).

The spirituality of queerness

A force field of

unconditional love

The first flower to bloom in

A post-apocalyptic heart

Our claim to liberation

Is in deciphering

shadows

Queerness is a dance

A choreography between shame and pleasure

I have grown accustomed to their wandering eyes

The essence of my being tickles

Their blushed cheeks

I love unapologetically

In the name of the ancestors who had to love in secret

What does it mean for us to be a good descendant? How can we honor the legacies that have come before us, while paving the way for a time to come? How can we be the time travelers of the imagining and working towards a different time and space? All of these questions are for us to make the time to reflect and honor this Pride Month and beyond. And to remember that we too, in time, will be Queer and Trancestors.

Further Reading:

Day Dreaming Yourself Into Existence by Alok Vaid Menon

Digital Transgender Archives

Pride 2020 Post-June is PRIDE season (myUMBC)

The History and Legacy of the Stonewall Rebellion (myUMBC)

UMBC Pride Month Happenings:

LGBTQ+ Pride Month Art Submissions-The Counseling Center

More information in this POST!

East Coast Prides happening this summer:

Baltimore Pride, June 13th-20th

-Virtual Pride Broadcast and Parade on June 19, 1-4pm

More Info: http://baltimorepride.org/

Philly Pride

-Moved to Saturday, September 4, 2021-Labor Day Weekend

More Info: http://www.phillygaypride.org/

Capital (DC) Pride, June 1-31

-Colorful Pridemobile Parade on June 12, 3-6pm

More Info: https://www.capitalpride.org/

NYC Pride

-The March on Sunday, June 27, 2021

More Info: https://www.nycpride.org/events/nyc-pride-march

Local Baltimore Organizations

Baltimore Safe Haven

https://www.baltimoresafehaven.org/

The Pride Center of Maryland

http://www.pridecentermd.org/

Free State Justice

-Storytelling Event on June 10th

https://freestate-justice.org/

National Museum:

Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in NYC

https://www.leslielohman.org/

If you want some tunes to celebrate this month, make sure to check out DJ Erin’s Spotify playlist from our 8th Annual Lavender Celebration that happened in May!

Student Org of the Week: LGBTQ+ Student Union

Come as you are! We are an organization that is looking to provide safety, comfort, encouragement, support, and fun for all UMBC's LGBTQ+ students and our allies! What makes us different is that we want to carve out a space for those who need belonging and family at UMBC, and we are willing to acknowledge when we as an org or a Board are not meeting that goal or our community's needs. We are striving to be a safe and foundational place for queer and LGBT+ students, while also working to strengthen and build more coalitions with other safe places and people on our campus. We'd love for you to join us! :)

We know that our backgrounds, cultural heritages, race, religion, and other social identity group memberships shape and influence our worldview.
October is LGBTQ+ History Month!

    <Tagline>Recognizing the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community</Tagline>

LGBTQ+ History Month originated in the United States, and was first celebrated in 1994. This month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history celebrates role models, and the history of the LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United States, it is celebrated in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day on October 11. However, countries recognize this month at different times of the year according to their specific significant events (e.g. United Kingdom recognizes this in February)

It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. Many gay and lesbian organizations supported the concept early on as did Governors William Weld of Massachusetts and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who recognized the inaugural month with official proclamations. In 1995, the National Education Association indicated support of LGBTQ+ History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly.

So why do we have Pride Month in June and LGBTQ+ History Month in October?

Wilson chose October as the month for the celebration due to National Coming Out Day. It was established as a widely known event, on October 11, the date of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. June is recognized as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots taking place on June 28-July 1.

Fall and Winter 2020 I3B LGBTQ+ Events

National Coming Out Day Celebration

Celebrating our LGBTQ+ Journeys

Thursday, October 8, 2020 | 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. | Online via Blackboard Collaborate

myUMBC Event Post: Link | BlackBoard Collaborate Session: Link

Where My People At?
Queer POC Culture

<Tagline>Its impact on the American mainstream</Tagline>

This post is written by Sofia Encarnacion, a Diversity & Inclusion Peer at the Mosaic Center. Sofia is a rising junior Economics and Mathematics major. In her spare time, she likes to play Animal Crossing. She also finally watched Avatar the Last Airbender.

Paris is Burning is a 1990 documentary that explores drag ball culture and centers predominantly trans & gay people of color. The director, Jennie Livingston- a White cis lesbian woman- received multiple Academy awards for her work. The documentary’s trans, gay, people of color subjects remained in poverty and many had AIDs-related deaths. When I first watched the documentary a year ago, I felt attracted to and disappointed by the stories told. The glamour and opulence of the balls were a huge focus while the abandonment, homelessness, poverty, disease, and death had an “it is what it is” tone to it.

I’ve had a few conversations within my social circles about Paris Is Burning. Some regard it as a monumental piece of media for queer culture, others have never heard of it. The latter group was unfamiliar with a lot of drag culture in general, with the exception of RuPaul’s Drag Race. However, these are not the only examples of queer POC culture being popularized without recognition.

Madonna’s hit song “Vogue” and the dancing associated with it was directly inspired by the vogue dancers and choreographers from the Harlem ballroom scene. Many Black and Latinxartists and entertainers throughout history were queer, but that is often unacknowledged or erased. For historical figures, there wasn’t common usage of a term that identified bisexual or trans people, so historians also have difficulty determining the identities of people who are suspected to not be cishet.

I’m a 20-year-old bisexual, cis, Latina trying my best to navigate a wealth of history that continues to go unnoticed. After taking a few GWST classes - one of them being Queer Representation in Film and TV (GWST 321) - I still don’t know nearly enough about the impact of Black and Latinx queer content on American culture. How can I celebrate that Moonlight received recognition while knowing that the struggle and pain depicted is not at all fictional? I want these depictions to be realistic, but also include moments of queer POC joy and celebration. Depictions in media that appreciate instead of appropriate. How can I embrace the cultural importance of Paris is Burning while knowing that a White cis woman profitted off of Black and Brown trans lives in the process?

Despite the problematic aspects of the documentary, I still highly recommend people watch Paris Is Burning. It captures the essence of drag ball culture and the struggles many of the participants faced in a way that is easily accessible. It also shows the origin of slang still used today. If you’ve enjoyed RuPaul’s Drag Race, it is almost imperative to watch Paris Is Burning to understand the history of drag before studio executive directors became involved. Drag balls have historically been by and for trans and gay people of color, which is why some of RuPaul’s rules and statements have been criticized for being harmful. For a while, RuPaul’s show was the only mainstream representation of drag ball culture, but now there are other forms of drag ball culture entertainment that are more inclusive and nuanced (such as FX’s Pose).

Although it wouldn’t be enough to just watch Paris is Burning or Pose. I would highly recommend reading and viewing other perspectives to understand the complexities of queer POC culture in general. I’ve listed some courses, readings, and films that are recommended by us, the Diversity and Inclusion staff, for this purpose. If you have other reading or viewing recommendations, please include them in the comment section!

UMBC Courses:

GWST 100: Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies

GWST 321: Queer Representation in Film and TV

GWST 348: Black, Queer, and Feminist Film

Readings:

Is Paris Burning? From Black Looks by bell hooks

Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw

Μaking Things Perfectly Queer:What Makes Queerness Most?
Joint Transgender & Gender Non-Binary(TGNB) Health Statement

  <Tagline>Your Identities are Valid. Always.</Tagline>

Joint Transgender and Gender Non-Binary (TGNB) Health Statement
Counseling Center
University Health Services
Women’s Center

Campus Life’s Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Centers

We celebrate the monumental ruling from the Supreme Court on June 15, 2020 that upholds protections for the LGBTQ+ community against discrimination in the workplace. Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, discrimination on the basis of sex is prohibited and this ruling declares that this includes discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

At the same time, we are deeply troubled by new Federal guidelines that place limitations on non-discrimination protections in healthcare by removing the inclusion of transgender and gender non-binary (TGNB) individuals. We are troubled not only by the ruling, but also the fact that these decisions were made during Pride Month, on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre, and in the midst of both a global pandemic and a movement to defend and affirm Black lives.

The erasure of these healthcare rights for TGNB people can significantly impact their access to health insurance, resources, and providers, making it more likely for them to experience inequities and unfair treatment in healthcare. Moreover, these guidelines do not align with UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence. We feel it is essential to reaffirm our support of the trans and non-binary communities at UMBC.

We want to assure our UMBC community that, regardless of this change at the federal level, Maryland state law protects healthcare access (including insurance coverage) for transgender and gender non-binary people. Other states may not have the same protections. UMBC students who have out-of-state health insurance that might not be as inclusive can select our student health insurance to be covered in Maryland.

The Counseling Center and University Health Services are available for questions, support, and guidance around getting your healthcare needs addressed in an inclusive and affirming manner. The Women's Center and The Mosaic, Interfaith, and Pride Centers will also continue to hold steadfast in our commitment to providing support services and educational programs, and will advocate for trans and non-binary community members' well-being and belonging.

Your identities are valid. Admittedly, I reminisce about some of my favorite classes but being a student can involve long nights, lots of studying, and an insurmountable amount of internal pressure to succeed. These experiences as a student become exacerbated when you have pressures tied to your identities - for me that was specifically being a 1st-generation American/college student and a queer person of color (QPOC).

However, I would never trade this experience for another. UMBC holds a special place in my heart because it was the first place that I felt fully seen for who I was as a person. I’ve been recently reminded of how special our campus is to me after reconnecting with so many of my LGBTQ+ friends during our COVID-19 quarantining.

Those that are close to me know that from the third grade, I was bullied mercilessly because of my masculinity...or lack thereof. I still remember being sucker punched and called a f*gg*t by the other boys at school simply because I did not have the mannerisms of a “man.” My parents noticed that I lost the drive to go to school. My parents eventually stepped in by contacting the schools but due to their limited English skills, they didn’t get very far. The school’s response instead was to put me into my own corner in the back of the classroom.

As a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s, positive portrayals of LGBTQ+ characters/celebrities were basically non-existent to me. This was before the widespread use of social media that facilitated communication with other LGBTQ+ folks. As I got older, I was not fully aware of my gay identity but I knew that I was different than the other boys. I was scared to talk about this with my parents. I felt ashamed to share what I was feeling because clearly my identity was “wrong” and “bad,” otherwise I wouldn’t have been bullied. By the time I got to high school, the majority of the bullying had stopped. However, I had internalized the experiences I had from the 3rd-8th grade so much so that I withdrew from others and had a very limited number of friends. Others probably viewed me as awkward or introverted, but inside I wasn’t happy about what I was feeling.

Fortunately, my high school counselor saw that I was struggling and served as a mentor to me as I was going through the first stages of my queer identity development process. I was finally able to share my identity with someone and it felt liberating. After a few months of meeting with her, I finally mustered up the courage to come out to my parents. I wrote a letter and it didn’t go well. My parents didn’t want to accept it because they were scared of the potential danger I could encounter as a gay man. During my time in high school, I developed close friendships with other students who were great allies. They were the first peers who I came out to in my junior year of high school. As the following year progressed, my parents came not only to accept me but also become my biggest supporters (Admittedly, it was still super awkward having them meet my first boyfriend at age 17). I eventually graduated high school and got accepted into UMBC.

UMBC was a culture shock for me. Not racially, but from an LGBTQ+ standpoint, It was the first time that I knew what it meant to have community. It was the first place that I was able to fully explore my identities and integrate them into who I have become today. Most importantly, it was the first place that I felt safe. I was able to meet some of my best friends. I did experience some academic challenges at UMBC but they were connected to my first-gen college student, second-gen immigrant identity, and some personal unexpected health and financial challenges in my family. These challenges could have been easier to navigate if I didn’t have the unnecessary feeling of embarrassment to ask for help. This cost me taking an additional year of school. Regardless, I recognize the privilege it has been to have access to a post-secondary education. But I digress, that is for another post. In the end, I was able to finally graduate and attend the second Lavender Celebration. It was really nice to know that I was sharing this celebratory milestone with my peers.

Throughout my many years at UMBC, I have been able to get two bachelor’s, a masters, a certificate, and been a staff member while still taking courses for my continued educational growth. One of my main roles (previous to Heidy George’s arrival) was planning the Annual Lavender Celebration. I planned the 4th-6th Lavender Celebrations with the assistance of our past student interns/peers and the rest of the Student Diversity and Inclusion staff. This also could have not been done without the student, alumni, staff, and faculty members that have spoken at our annual celebrations and volunteered in the award selection process, supported our marketing and promotion, and speaking at our annual celebrations. Our students have joked in our office about how much I pay attention to detail when it comes to creating the color scheme for the decor, the program, the awards, and other key parts that make the program possible. I confess that I do enjoy seeing all the Lavender for the day. However, I put a lot of energy into this event because I wanted to celebrate our newer graduates.

Today, my parents, my friends, and my partner Josh have become my main support system and have been my biggest cheerleaders in both my academic and professional careers.

Although my experiences as a queer kid bring back a lot of the pain and something that should be acknowledged, I don’t want to be pitied. This is an experience that is very personal to me yet one that unfortunately I know I am not alone in. Instead, I, like everyone else, deserve to be celebrated. This celebration goes beyond me, our office, and our campus. It’s about celebrating the fact that LGBTQ+ people persevere in attaining their degrees, despite the sociopolitical barriers placed on us because of our sexual/romantic orientation and/or gender identity/expression. Like I said in the beginning, college isn’t easy, but we should take the time to honor all the work we did to make it through our journey.

So you may be wondering “what I can do to be a better ally?” or “how can I show my support for a graduating LGBTQ+ student?” Well, now that you know more about my coming out story, I encourage you to come to our 7th Annual Lavender Celebration. I know things look a little different this year, but we hope that we can create a similar communal feel through a virtual experience. I want to give a special shout out to Heidy George, Program Associate for Student Diversity and Inclusion and Amelia Meman, Assistant Director of the Women’s Center for taking the lead on planning this year’s celebration. It has been an honor to be part of the 2017-2019 Lavender Celebration planning process.

This is just my story and connection to the Lavender Celebrations/Ceremonies/Graduations happening across campuses globally. I can attest that there are countless staff and faculty members that care about you not only as a student but as a person.

Remember that you matter, you are valued, and that you are loved.
