Hello oSTEM! We hope you had a wonderful break and are rejuvenated to finish the semester strong.


Now that we have gotten our foot in the door with some meetings and events, UMBC oSTEM is ready to take our next step- a project!


To be blunt, we know the struggle of finding an organization that is accepting without putting your safety on the line. This is why we are proposing a project to collect responses of current employees in Baltimore-based organizations. The data will be used to create an employment safety index for queer people in the Baltimore area. 


To make this project a success, we are asking for your help. Though not required, a project like this is a great opportunity to give back to the community and be involved in the change you want to see.


We will have three phases to this project: 


Phase 1 (Jan to Mid Feb): Material Creation. We need students to develop a survey that will protect users while still collecting the data we need. Additionally, we will need students to standardize the language we will use when distributing and explaining the survey.


Phase 2 (Mid Feb to Early May): Distribution. We need students to distribute the survey. We have a few organizations in mind, and word of mouth will help. Boots on the ground and hanging flyers is an option as well.


Phase 3 (Early May to early June): Sorting and Graphics. We need students to sort through the data and produce results we can share with oSTEM national and local LGBTQ+ support groups. We want to finish these in time for pride month so organizations have it in time for their celebrations.


And beyond: We hope to circle back next fall to discuss what went well and what we can do to improve this project in the future. Our hope is to create something that other oSTEM chapters can use for their local cities. We'll want a few students to get internal feedback during and after the process for this part.

Happy Monday oSTEM! The e-board has some exciting announcements for you.

First, we will be hosting virtual meetings on Discord every other Friday, 7-9 pm, starting this week. Because the entire e-board are commuters, this is a way we can have regular programming in addition to our in-person events. We welcome members to join for 10 minutes, 2 hours, or anything in between, as this will be a space to build connections and learn more about oSTEM. This week, we plan to play Jackbox and a few other games. We hope to see you then! 

Here is a temporary invite to the Discord. The invite can also be found on the home page in the right panel. 

Second, oSTEM is now an official chapter! Questions and comments can still be sent to the current officer team emails, but we recommend starting to use umbc@chapters.ostem.org, as this email will remain unchanged between leadership changes. (Speaking of, we will be looking for new leadership in the spring as we grow and seniors graduate.) We hope to have some official pins and buttons sent soon to distribute at events- so stay tuned.

Hello oSTEM members! We hope your summer is going well so far. As some of you may know, oSTEM’s annual conference is this fall in our very own Baltimore, MD! Given this opportunity, the officers are working hard to obtain the funds for one or two general body members to attend. Because there are more than two of you, we are opening a form to fairly decide who should go by gathering interest and involvement for oSTEM. (The form will be at the bottom of this message.)

For those who didn’t know about this opportunity, don’t fret! The conference will be at the Baltimore Conference center October 16-18th. This conference will have workshops, panels, career/grad expos, networking events, and more! All of which will focus on queer people in STEM. We highly recommend each and everyone of you read about it on oSTEM's conference website. Of course, any questions can be directed to our team. 

To get some general information out of the way:
We currently are not planning to get hotel rooms, so you must have transportation to and from the conference center each day (we may carpool).
You must be available all of the days. The tickets are for the entire time and it is too expensive to buy one for someone only able to go half of the time.
If chosen you must attend a reasonable amount of events. We understand that it’s impossible to go to everything, but skipping multiple workshops for non conference-related things does not look good.

Finally, when filling out the form, don’t be afraid to say you are unsure to a question! A few no-s or unsure-s will not disqualify you from going. We want to understand the involvement and drive of our general body members to make sure those who will benefit the greatest will get to go. Tickets are due by September 26th, so please fill out your responses on this form ASAP so we can consider your attendance.
