National Hispanic Heritage Month, September
15-October 15.Starting in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and incorporating September
15 and 16, the independence days for Central American nations and Mexico,
respectively, the period was expanded in 1988 to National Hispanic Heritage
Month. Each year the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers
Council and the Hispanic Foundation select a theme for the month and commission
a poster to reflect that theme.
October 2-8 is Mental Illness Awareness Week. MIAW is a time to learn about serious mental illnesses such as major depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Mental illnesses are biological, psychological and social in nature. They affect all communities and cultures.
One in four adults experiences a mental disorder in any given year. One in 17 adults lives with serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder. And in America, more people die by suicide (50% more) each year than by homicide.
MIAW is especially important this year as severe budget cuts threaten mental health services in many communities around the country. People who do not receive treatment may end up in hospitals, shelters, in jail or dead.
Treatment works—and saves lives.

You can also take part in Depression Screening Day on October 5th, from 11am-3pm. UCS will offer free screenings for depression and anxiety to all UMBC students (http://my.umbc.edu/groups/ucs/events/8543).
]]>First Year Council provides a unique opportunity for First Year Students (transfers and freshmen alike) from all over campus to work together in order to make this campus their home. Enthusiastic students network and form bonds with one another outside of the class room. Further, new students get to experience leadership positions and meet with current student, faculty and staff leaders who can help them accomplish their goals. First Year Council is one of the main reasons I am the person that I am today and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.
If you are interested in joining First Year Council, join a club and ask the Executive Board to nominate you. If you are an Executive Board member and know someone who would be a great fit for First Year Council please nominate them!
