College Slump

<Tagline>Strategies For Making It Through a Challenging Season</Tagline>

You often hear talk of the sophomore slump-a time when students can experience heightened uncertainty and lower motivation, in addition to second-guessing their choices in their first year of college.

However, we recognize that this same type of slump is likely impacting students at all levels –a college slump, if you will.

Below we lay out strategies and resources for overcoming a challenging season in college.

You may be socially isolated and/or disconnected from your friends. You may be craving peer interaction and support in ways you never have before.

It can be hard to take the initial step but try mixing it up a bit.

Get a group of friends together to play a video game or virtual trivia.

Organize a small study group. Even if each person is focused on individual work, having the presence of others with you can be a big mood booster!

Is the weather nice? Meet up with a friend to take a walk/hike or lunch in a park.

Spend time with Officer Chip!

Additionally, don’t forget that Campus Life offers opportunities for student engagement. Check out their myUMBC page or follow the Student Events Board (SEB)’s for a list of events. Many student organizations are meeting in person or are still connecting online with some inviting all students to join certain programs and events.

Academically, you may be feeling a lack of motivation to attend class or study. You also may be questioning your choice of major and wondering if you should completely change your academic path.

The Academic Success Center has great online learning resources, including a series of interactive videos. Additionally, the ASC offers tutoring services if you need extra support.

Check in with your professors during their office hours or chat with a TA to get assistance with specific questions you have about your course content.

Advisors in the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising welcome the opportunity to discuss your academic plans, including any potential major changes you are considering.

Get inspired about your academic and professional journey and attend THE MAJOR EVENT happening Wednesday, November 16!

Generally speaking, slumps are a normal part of any college experience. It may seem like everyone around you has things 100% figured out, but that is certainly not the case. What you do in the midst of a slump will set the course for your remaining time at UMBC. The solution is almost always to take some form of action, no matter how small the step. If making social or academic changes seems too much right now, a step in the direction of your mental health and well-being is a better fit. If that’s the case, we encourage you to visit University Health Services and Health Promotion or the Counseling Center for support.

Student Affairs Leadership Transition

Dear UMBC Community,

I write to inform the campus community that I will be launching a national search for the vice president of student affairs in partnership with the search firm Isaacson, Miller. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Nancy Young, who will be leaving the role on June 30, 2023, for more than 35 years of service to our UMBC community.

Young joined UMBC in 1986 and has served as the vice president for student affairs since 2007. Grounded in an exceptional commitment to our students, Young's visionary perspective and service to the UMBC community has been instrumental in recruitment, retention, and student outcomes.

Under Young's leadership, the resident community grew to 4,000 beds, furthering the development of the residential campus. In recent years, Young advocated for and opened the Center for Well-Being and played a pivotal role in bringing the American Council on Education's Internationalization Lab to the campus. A champion for our core values of diversity and inclusive excellence, she established a director of inclusive excellence within the Division of Student Affairs and expanded support, programming, and resources for our diverse student population. Young served as a key leader in the campus response to the global pandemic and its impact on our community.

Young's leadership has been recognized in the broader higher education community. In 2021, she served as chair of the Council of Student Affairs for the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, collaborating with other student affairs leaders across the U.S. to develop and promote practices that enhance students' experiences and well-being during one of the most challenging times in higher education and student affairs. In October, she traveled to France as the recipient of a 2022 Fulbright International Education Administrators award. Young attended a seminar helping U.S. international education professionals and senior higher education officials create empowering connections with their counterparts and the higher education systems of other countries. She was also recognized as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2022 by the Daily Record.

Please join me in thanking Vice President Young for her commitment and service to our community.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

<Tagline>It's about insulin, then small steps to support well being</Tagline>

Diabetes
Awareness Month is celebrated in November, where we call attention to a
serious health condition that is no laughing matter with its need for
monitoring and management, as well as its intersection with disability
and mortality. November includes World Diabetes Day (November 14th)
which was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation and
the World Health Organization to recognize growing concerns about
escalating health threats posed by diabetes. In 2006, it was recognized
by the UN, and is celebrated on the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting
who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.

Diabetes
has a wide global reach and fits within the definition of a disability,
and sometimes concerns about its flares (especially with Type 1) have
graduate and undergraduate students reach out for on-campus resources,
    such as
